Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Heartbreaker, 3-2

READING, Pa. – Cameron Yost scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute and the Albright Lions men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker to Penn State Berks on Sunday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.

Yost got behind the defense and slid a shot past Lions' goalie Brendan Hanratty with 6:14 remaining in the first overtime period to lift Penn State Berks to the victory.

This marks the second straight overtime game for Albright after the team notched a 2-1 victory over Immaculata during Friday's season opener.

The Lions had tied the game at two with just over seven minutes left in regulation as senior Jared Leckburg converted a penalty kick after classmate Anthony Parlato had been taken down in the box.

Penn State Berks grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as Brenden Valverde fed Luke Romanoski on a through ball and the latter was able to put it in the net. Albright collected seven shots in the opening stanza, but was unable to solve Nittany Lions' keeper Gerardo Sosa.

Freshman Alexander MacDonald tied the game at one apiece less than three minutes into the second half as he tapped home a nice cross from Parlato on the far right wing. Valverde's strike in the 78th minute from the top of the box gave Penn State Berks a 2-1 edge for the time being before Leckburg potted his PK attempt in the top right corner of the net to even the affair.

Albright had a chance in overtime, but Billy Hanratty's shot was stopped by Trent Johnson in the first minute of the extra session.

The Lions held a 17-13 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in shots on target. Parlato tallied a team-high six shots to lead the hosts, while Hanratty and MacDonald registered three apiece. Valverde had eight shots to pace Penn State Berks.

The game was a physical affair as the two teams combined for 24 fouls including 15 in the second half.

Albright will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they welcome Mount Aloysius to Shirk Stadium for a 5 p.m. tilt.
