Football Bested by Widener on the Road

CHESTER, Pa. – The Albright football team was unable to overcome a strong first half from Widener as they lost to the Pride, 69-0, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in MAC play.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in MAC play. This is the first time since the 1992 season that Albright has started a season 0-4. Meanwhile, the Pride improve to 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in MAC play.

Senior Kyle Dickerson posted a season-high 105 receiving yards on eight catches, while sophomore running back Will Dogba led the Lions with 21 rushing yards. Junior quarterback Jimmy Lahay finished 17-of-34 for 191 yards passing.

Widener would start the ball and take it straight down the field in eight plays that was capped by a one-yard rushing touchdown to go up 7-0. The Lions looked to even the score as they drove down to the Pride 21-yard line, but a sack and false start ended the threat. Senior kicker Kevin Goetz then missed a 48-yard field goal wide left. The Pride then struck again four plays later on a 64-yard touchdown pass to go up 14-0. Lahay would get picked on the Lions first play of the next drive, and the Pride scored two plays later to take a 21-0 lead. A botched punt from the Lions would result in good starting field position for Widener, who would then score three plays later to go up 28-0.

Following a three-and-out to start the second quarter for Albright, senior defensive tackle David Sanchez forced a fumble on the first play of the Widener drive to give the Lions good starting position. Albright made it to the Widener 19-yard line before being stopped on fourth down. The Pride then embarked on their longest scoring drive of the game at 12 plays and 78 yards to take a 35-0 lead. Albright would stop the Pride on 4th down deep in the Lions zone, but an interception gave the Pride a chance to add to its lead before halftime. Widener scored on a 14-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left to take a 42-0 lead.

Albright fumbled on its first possession of the second half, but freshman linebacker Sam Viera grabbed an interception to give the Lions the ball back at their own 18-yard line. Widener would force another three-and-out and then put together a six play 61-yard drive to take a 48-0 lead midway through the third quarter. Sanchez blocked the Pride's extra point to keep the score at 48-0. Each team had a pair of three-and-outs to bring the game into the fourth quarter, and the Pride would tack on another touchdown to make it 55-0 following a fumble inside the Lions own 10-yard line. The Pride would finish the game off with a pair of long touchdown runs to bring the final to 69-0.

Freshman Jaylan Lawson led the team with 13 tackles (six solo) and was followed by Viera with seven (two solo), 1.0 TFL, and one sack. Sanchez finished with five tackles (four solo), 1.0 TFL, one forced fumble, two hurries, and a blocked extra point. The Pride tallied six sacks, three interceptions, and one forced fumble. Widener quarterback Sean McGaughey threw 326 yards on 22-of-33 attempts and five touchdowns.

The Lions will return to action next Saturday, September 29th when they will face FDU-Florham at 1 p.m. for homecoming Saturday.
