Field Hockey Suffers Tough 1-0 Loss at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Albright field hockey team suffered a 1-0 loss on the road to Susquehanna on Wednesday night in non-conference action. The River Hawks lone goal of the game came on a penalty stroke early in the first half.

With the loss, the Lions have dropped two in a row to fall to 3-6 overall on the season. Meanwhile, Susquehanna improves to 4-5 overall and avenge a 4-0 loss to the Lions from a year ago.

Each defense controlled play early as the River Hawks tallied the first shot of the game in the seventh minute. That shot then began a run of pressure from Susquehanna in the next few minutes as the next River Hawk shot hit the post. The pressure then brought a penalty stroke opportunity for the River Hawks in the 16th minute which they would score on to make it 1-0. The Lions then created three penalty corner opportunities in the final seven minutes of the half, but were unable to get on the board. Junior Kaley Donmoyer had the first shot of the game for the Lions blocked in the 31st minute.

The River Hawks came out strong in the second half, and it took four strong saves from Lions senior goalkeeper Aileen Taylor to keep the deficit at one. Albright then had its best push of the game in the 46th minute as they registered two shots during that time minute. Senior Dennise Greene had a shot saved that almost tied the game at one. The Lions had one last chance to tie the game in the final minutes as junior Marley Berger had a shot denied in the 66th minute.

The Spartans outshot the Lions 19-6 overall and 8-3 in shots on goal. Susquehanna also had a slight 8-7 advantage in penalty corners. Taylor suffered the tough loss after making six saves and allowing one goal in seventy minutes. River Hawk goalkeeper Emily DeGaetano tallied the win after making three saves in 70 minutes of action.
