READING, Pa. – The Albright field hockey team used four second half goals to pull away from Hood and earn a 6-0 victory on Friday afternoon at Shirk Stadium in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the win, the Lions improve to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Blazers fall to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Lions started out strong by registering four shots in the first five minutes of the first half, but were unable to get on the scoreboard through the first rush. Senior
Annette Helmandollar then broke the scoreless tie in the 11
th minute with the Lions first goal of the game following a feed through the middle from junior
Kaley Donmoyer. Helmandollar then extended the Lions lead in the 18
th minute with her second goal of the game after an initial cross from
Nicole Crumling bounced off the Blazer goalkeeper and right to her. The Lions continued to hammer the Blazers end with multiple good scoring chances in the final half of the first period, but settled with a 2-0 lead headed into halftime.
After a scoreless first 12 minutes of play to start the second half, sophomore
Bailey Lehman scored her third goal of the season to extend the Lions lead out to 3-0 in the 48
th minute. Albright would add to its lead in the 60
th minute after
Melissa Nagy scored her first collegiate goal after she got a tip of the initial shot from senior
Dennise Greene at the top of the box. Junior
Marley Berger then made it a 5-0 game off a big scramble in front of the net in the 66
th minute before Greene finished the scoring with a goal two minutes later off a deflection from junior
Mia Moshang.
The Lions held a dominant 34-0 shot advantage with 26 of the shots going on net. Albright also held a sizable 29-0 advantage in penalty corners as well with 16 coming in the second half. Sophomore
Brynne Schoppe registered the first shutout of her collegiate career after making no saves in the entire 70 minutes. Blazers goalkeeper Hailey Poisal suffered the loss after making 13 saves in net during her 54:25 of action. Nicole Bennett entered the game in the second half and made three saves in 15:35 of action.
Albright will return to action on Wednesday, October 3
rd when they will host Scranton in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
