ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Albright Lions men's basketball team (5-12, 4-5 MACC) erased a 14-point halftime deficit and closed the game on an 8-0 run to snap a six-game skid with a 62-57 win over the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen (6-12, 3-6 MACC) on Saturday afternoon at Sorrentino Gymnasium.
Trailing 57-54 with just over four minutes to play, the Lions'
Samuel Majekodunmi hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to one and kickstart an 8-0 run over the final 4:09. Sophomore
Sidney Brown's steal and layup with 3:16 left gave Albright the lead for good at 58-57 and senior
Jared Rappoport's hook shot in the final seconds iced the victory for the Lions.
Albright was able to hold the Dutchmen without a field goal over the final 6:27 of the contest.
Majekodunmi had 15 points (8-of-8 FTs) to pace the Lions, while Brown added 12 points and five steals and Rappoport chipped in with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and nine rebounds. Freshman
Mark Brinkley Jr. drained a pair of threes and had eight points off the bench.
Justin Baker led the way offensively for LVC with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and was joined in double figures by Anderson (11 points) and Zach Tucker (10 points).
The Lions came storming out of the gate in this one and scored seven of the first nine points, but LVC quickly answered and a layup from Baker marked the start of a 20-2 run and capped it with a pair of free throws as the Dutchmen led by as many as 15 at 26-11 with 8:24 left in the opening stanza. A layup from Majekodunmi brought Albright back within 11 at 29-18 with 1:47 to play, but Anderson hit a layup of his own in the final minute to give the Dutchmen a 34-20 lead heading into the locker room.
Sophomore
Christian Lane hit a pair of free throws in the early stages of the second half and the Lions opened the half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead back to eight at 34-26. The two teams would trade buckets over the next few minutes and Baker's layup with 14:23 to play gave the Dutchmen a 44-35 lead, but senior
Jayson Clark hit a pair of free throws to start a 7-0 spurt for the Lions and a Majekodunmi three at the 12:55 mark cut the lead to two at 44-42. A jumper from Jeremy Deihm stretched the lead back to six at 50-44 with 10:04 to play, but Albright once again answered with an 8-2 run and Majekodunmi hit a pair of free throws to tie things at 52 apiece with 6:50 to play. LVC scored five of the next six before the Lions rallied with the afore-mentioned 8-0 run.
Albright shot 21-of-53 (39.6%) from the floor, 6-of-19 (31.6%) from deep and 14-of-16 (87.5%) from the free throw line including 11-of-12 in the second half. The Dutchmen shot 22-of-58 (37.9%) from the field and 4-of-18 (22.2%) from beyond the arc, while hitting 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line. The Lions held the Dutchmen to 31% shooting (9-of-29) in the second half and an 0-of-6 mark from beyond the arc.
The Lions returns home to host Widener in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m.
