GLENSIDE, Pa. – Arcadia's Taylor Dunn hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left and the Albright Lions women's basketball team (10-11, 5-7 MACC) dropped a second straight heartbreaker with a 49-47 loss to the Knights (8-12, 5-6 MACC) on Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
Trailing 49-47, Albright had a pair of looks on the final possession but freshman
Abby Gaffney's potential go-ahead three was off the mark. Dunn's free throws came just six seconds after the Lions had tied the game at 47 on a pair of free throws from junior
Lauren Killion.
Freshmen
Gabby Boggs and
Dejah Terrell had 12 points apiece to pace the Lions, while Gaffney added seven off the bench.
Dunn hit all nine of her free throw attempts en route to a game-high 17 points for Arcadia and was joined in double figures by Camille Menns who had 10.
A three-point play from Julia Makowski gave the Knights a 10-6 lead with 4:46 left in the opening quarter before
Shaunna Bruker hit a layup on the other end to kickstart an 8-2 Albright run and a late jumper from Menns tied things at 14 apiece after one. The Lions scored the first five points of the quarter to open up a 19-14 lead, but Arcadia scored the final seven points of the quarter and a late free throw from Holly Daveski gave the hosts a 21-19 edge heading into the locker room.
Killion hit a layup at the 5:14 mark of the third to cut the lead to 26-23, but Arcadia scored the next four points and Daveski's layup made it a 30-23 game with 4:23 left in the quarter. The Lions closed the quarter on an 8-4 spurt and a jumper from
Zaria Mohamed in the final seconds cut the lead to 34-31 after three quarters. Menns' layup with 7:59 to play opened up a 38-33 lead for the Knights, but a quick 6-2 spurt from the Lions capped by a Boggs layup cut the lead to one at 40-39 with 4:38 left. Arcadia quickly stretched the lead back to six at 47-41 with 2:27 to play and a pair of free throws from Terrell along with a layup from Gaffney set the stage for the afore-mentioned clutch free throws from Killion.
Albright shot 19-of-51 (37.3%) from the field, 1-of-9 (11.1%) from deep and hit 8-of-10 (80%) from the free throw line while Arcadia was 15-of-48 (31.3%) from the field, 0-of-9 from beyond the arc and converted 19-of-24 (79.2%) from the free throw line.
The Lions return home to host Hood on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Bollman Center.
