FREDERICK, Md. – Behind a strong performance on defense, the Albright Lions women's basketball team battled to a 48-42 road win over Hood on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the win, the Lions tallied their fourth-straight win as they improved to 8-8 overall on the season and 3-4 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Blazers fall to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Freshman
Dejah Terrell led the Lions off the bench with a team-high 13 points, while adding four rebounds and three blocks. Junior
Zaria Mohamed posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman
Gabby Boggs added seven points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Lions opened the contest with scoring the first seven points of the game to take a 7-0 lead at the 6:30-mark of the first quarter. A layup from junior Haley Dayton would snap a 3:05 drought of no field goals and give the Lions a 9-4 lead at the 4:02-mark after the Blazers scored four-straight points. Albright would be held scoreless for the final four minutes of the first quarter and would take a 9-6 lead into the second quarter. Hood made it a one-point game at 9-8 to start the final 10 minutes of the first half, but then the Lions used a 14-3 run to take a 23-11 lead at the 4:18-mark. Albright's defense held the Blazers to just three field goals in the second quarter and did not allow Hood a field goal for a span of 5:30. The Lions would take a 25-14 lead into halftime.
Mohamed opened the second half with a layup to bring the Lions lead out to 13 points, but the Blazers scored six-straight points to make it a 27-20 game at the 8:19-mark. Up 30-20, the Lions saw their lead shrink to 32-29 at the 3:02-mark of the third quarter. Albright did respond to maintain its lead by out-scoring the Blazers 6-4 in the final minutes of the third to take a 38-33 into the final 10 minutes. Hood started the fourth with a three-pointer to make it a 38-36 game, but the Lions scored three-straight points of their own to take back a five-point lead at 41-36 with 8:10 left in the second half. A jumper from the Blazers made it 41-38 at the 7:08-mark before each team would not score a point until the 2:51-mark. Lauren Killion saved the night for the Lions as they went back up 44-40 with 2:20 left. Sophomore
Alli Marcus would put the finishing touches on the night on a jumper with 23 seconds left to seal the 48-42 win for Albright.
Albright shot 30.6 percent from the field (19-of-62) for the game and just 1-of-11 from beyond the arc with Killon's clutch three-pointer in the fourth quarter. The Lions went 50 percent (9-of-18) from the free throw line and held a 52-42 rebounding advantage which led to 15 second chance points. Abright also received 26 points from its bench. Meanwhile, the Blazers shot just 25 percent (15-of-60) from the field and 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc. Hood went 9-of-16 (56.3%) from the free throw line and forced 17 Albright turnovers.
Ebony Pitt led the Blazers with a game-high 14 points, while tallying seven rebounds and four steals. Morgan Anderson also added a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, January 16
th when they will host crosstown rival Alvernia at 6 p.m.
