Field Hockey Downed by Alvernia in Double Overtime

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team dropped their fourth overtime game in six games on Saturday night in MAC Commonwealth play against Alvernia as a penalty stroke won the game for the Golden Wolves.
 
With the loss, the Lions drop to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves improve to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
 
The Golden Wolves came out strong as they registered three shots in the first three minutes of the game. Senior Melissa Nagy posted the first shot of the game for the Lions in the 7th minute that was saved. The second quarter saw mostly midfield play that resulted in no shots from both teams, and one penalty corner earned by the Lions. The defensive war continued in the third quarter as the Golden Wolves had two shots saved by junior goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe. Albright came alive in the fourth quarter as they started generating multiple chances on net. Albright had three penalty corner opportunities in the 57th minute, but were unable to get the ball in the net. Junior Bailey Lehman had a good look in the 58th minute saved which sent the game into overtime.
 
Albright had big chance in the first overtime as the Golden Wolves were called for a yellow card in the 64th minute. The Lions were unable to take advantage of the woman-up advantage, and each team had a chance in the final minute of the first overtime saved. Alvernia had a shot in the box saved in the 73rd minute, but were given a penalty stroke chance. Madison Pothoff scored on the penalty stroke to win the game for Alvernia. It was the first penalty stroke the Lions had faced all season.
 
The Golden Wolves held an 11-6 shot advantage for the game, and a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Albright held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners. Schoppe was dealt the loss despite a valiant eight-save effort, while Golden Wolves goalkeeper Emma Beamesderfer grabbed the win with four saves.
 
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, October 15th as they will host No. 2 ranked TCNJ at 4 p.m.
