Field Hockey Defeats Widener in a Shootout

CHESTER, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team pulled out a dramatic 1-0 win on the road in a shootout over Widener on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth play.

With the win, the Lions kept their MAC Commonwealth Tournament hopes alive by improving to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in MAC Commonwealth play. It is the first win in a shootout for the Lions since September 30th, 2007 when they defeated Marywood. Meanwhile, the Pride fall to 13-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Widener started strong early in the first quarter as they got off four shots and earned three penalty corners in the first 6:13 of the game. Despite this, the Lions played strong defense to keep the Pride off the board. Junior Bailey Lehman got the first shot off for the Lions in the 13th minute as it went wide. The Lions began generating chances in the second quarter as they received a pair of penalty corners. Albright had both shots blocked in the second quarter, and kept the Pride off the scoreboard with a save from junior goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe on a penalty corner as time expired.

Much like the start of the first half, the Pride came out strong to start in the third quarter as they got five shots off in the first 7:28, and received five penalty corners during that span. Schoppe was able to continue to keep the Pride off the scoreboard, and the Lions had a huge chance on a penalty stroke at the 39:50-mark to take the lead. Unfortunately for the Lions, Lehman's shot was saved by Pride goalkeeper Sabrina Roberto. Schoppe opened the fourth quarter with a save before the Lions began controlling play. Following a pair of chances off corners, the Lions were awarded a second penalty stroke. This time senior Marley Berger had her shot saved by Roberto. Each team tallied a few more shots in the fourth quarter, but were unable to capitalize as the game went to overtime.

The Lions, playing their fourth overtime game in five contests, were held without a shot until the final minute of the first overtime. Albright was able to earn an untimed penalty corner, but senior Kaley Donmoyer had her shot saved by Pride defender Madi Radnoff. Schoppe made a pair of saves in the second overtime period to send the Lions to their first shootout in 12 years. Sophomore Sydney Baxter opened the shootout by beating Roberto, and Schoppe stopped the first Pride shot. Following misses from each team, senior Mia Moshang beat Roberto put the Lions up 2-0 in the shootout. Schoppe then closed out the win with two more saves.

The Pride held a 23-13 shot advantage for the game, and an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Widener also held a 17-6 advantage in penalty corners as well. Schoppe earned the win following a valiant 11-save performance, while Roberto suffered the loss after making five saves.

Albright will return to action on Saturday, October 26th when they will face #12 Messiah at 5:30 p.m.
