Field Hockey Defeats Stevenson 2-1 on Senior Day

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team closed out their 2019 season on a high note by picking up a 2-1 win over Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth play on senior day at Shirk Stadium.

Prior to the game, the Albright field hockey team honored its eight graduating seniors in part of senior day activities. The Lions will finish the 2019 season 7-12 overall and 3-4 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs will finish the season 6-13 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

The Lions came out strong in the first quarter as they nearly got on the board in the second minute as senior Brooke Yerger had back-to-back shots saved. Albright spent the majority of the first quarter on the Mustang side of the field, but were unable to get on the scoreboard. The Lions continued momentum into the second quarter as they had a pair of shots just go wide of the cage. Yerger got the Lions on the board in the 24th minute on a shot off a rebound. Sophomore Sydney Baxter had the initial shot saved before Yerger collected the ball and scored. The Mustangs tied the score just under a minute later off a redirected shot following a penalty corner to make it 1-1. Albright had a pair of shots saved before the end of the first half to bring the score tied at one.

Albright started fast again in the third quarter and received two penalty corners in the first 1:34. Senior Kaley Donmoyer converted the second one to put the Lions ahead 2-1 at the 31:43-mark. She received a pass in the center of the circle from junior Nicole Crumling. Albright continued to pressure the Mustangs as they tallied 11 shots in the third quarter, and drew six penalty corners. Eight of the shots and four of the corners came in a 3:58 span. The Mustangs began making a push at the end of the third quarter as they got two shots off, but both were saved by Lions goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe. Stevenson then got off a pair of shots within a 10-second span that Schoppe turned away to start the fourth quarter. The Lions continued to play strong defense, and held on for the win despite junior Bailey Lehman getting a green card in the final two minutes.

The Lions held a sizable 22-7 shot advantage for the game, and a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal. Albright also held a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. Schoppe earned the win after making four saves in the full 60 minutes. Stevenson used four goalkeepers in the game with Grace Hollin leading the team with seven saves. Hollin also suffered the loss after giving up the eventual game-winning goal in the third quarter.
