Field Hockey Suffers Double OT Loss to DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team was dealt a loss in double overtime for the second time in four games, this time to DeSales by a final score of 3-2 on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Lions as they drop to 5-8 overall, while the Bulldogs improve to 6-7 overall.

The Lions started fast as they got on the board just 1:31 into the game as sophomore Sydney Baxter collected a blocked shot, and beat Bulldogs goalkeeper Katarina Polyviou. The Lions did not register a shot during the remainder of the first quarter, but nearly extended their lead in the 17th minute as senior Marley Berger had back-to-back shots saved by Polyviou in front. Albright continued to control play throughout the second quarter as they generated a couple of chances. The Bulldogs almost tied the game in the 27th minute as they ripped off the back-to-back shots in the circle. Lions goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe made the save on the first one, and senior Mia Moshang made a defensive save to keep the game tied into the half.

DeSales wasted little time in the second half to finally tie the game at one after they tallied a breakaway goal in the 35th minute. Schoppe was tested again just seconds later after making a big save on a shot that came from a penalty corner opportunity. Albright was unable to generate much in the third quarter despite having a pair of penalty corners in the final seven seconds. It took until the 55th minute for the first shot to be registered in the fourth quarter, but it began a big press from DeSales that resulted in a goal. The Bulldogs earned a penalty corner in the 56th minute, and were able to knock the ball into the net following a big scramble in front. Albright valiantly fought back and tied the score at two with 1:58 left in regulation on a goal from junior Nicole Crumling. Junior Bailey Lehman found Crumling in front of the net off a penalty corner, and she turned and scored her first goal of the season. DeSales earned a penalty corner with five seconds left, but had their lone shot blocked to force overtime.

Each team had a shot saved in the first overtime, and Albright had another one blocked in the 68th minute off a penalty corner. The Lions controlled play to start the second overtime as they recorded three shots in the first three minutes Albright had one last shot saved in the 76th minute before the Bulldogs won the game with 4:02 left in the second overtime off pressure in the circle.

The Bulldogs held a 19-16 shot advantage for the game with both teams registering nine shots on net. Albright held a slight 13-11 edge in penalty corners. Schoppe suffered the loss after making five saves in the full time, while Polyviou made seven saves to pick up the win.

Albright will return to action on Saturday, October 12th when they will travel across town to face rival Alvernia at 7 p.m.
