Men's Hoops Downed in Overtime by Stockton, 83-74

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Albright men's basketball team let a late second half lead slip away before eventually falling 83-74 to Stockton in the championship game of the tip-off tournament, hosted by the Ospreys on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 2-1 on the season after picking up a pair of wins this week. Meanwhile, the Ospreys of the NJAC improve to 2-1 overall.

Junior Samuel Majekodunmi led all scorers on the floor with 26 points on the afternoon. Majekodunmi went 10-of-13 from the free throw line, while adding eight rebounds and three assists. His classmate Sidney Brown posted 19 points behind going 7-of-12 from the field along with posting four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Junior Troy Smoot tallied 15 points and eight rebounds, while classmate Isaiah Harris led the team with 13 rebounds.

Stockton opened the contest strong as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the 17:53-mark of the first half behind a pair of three-pointers. The Lions scored back-to-back jumpers to make it an 8-6 game before a three-pointer put the Ospreys back up five at 11-6 with 16:16 left in the first half. Albright got a quick 6-1 burst to tie the game at 12 at the 13:28-mark, but eight-straight points put the Ospreys back ahead at 20-12 with 8:05 left in the first half. A three-pointer from Smoot at the 6:59-mark snapped a scoreless drought of 6:29 for the Lions, and a second one just over minute later cut the deficit down to 20-18. Stockton did not lose the lead for the rest of the half, but never led by more than five points in the final six minutes. Albright was able to hang around and trail by just three points at the half, 27-24.

It was the Lions that came out red hot in the second half as they scored the first 12 points to go up 36-27 at the 16:31-mark. Albright hit four-straight field goals during that span following a missed three-pointer. The Lions continued to build their lead as a three-pointer from junior Deion Booker put the Lions up 40-29 at the 14:24-mark of the second half. However, the Ospreys ended the run with nine-straight points to cut the Lions lead down to 40-38 at the 12:17-mark of the second half. Albright went back up five points at 45-40 following a three-point play from Majekodunmi at the 10:49-mark, and eventually seven points at 49-42 behind another three-point play from Majekodunmi. Albright was able to extend its lead out to 56-46 at the 7:15-mark behind six points from Brown during the stretch. Six-straight points from the Ospreys made it a 56-52 game at the 5:35-mark of the second half, but Majekodunmi ended the run with a three-pointer at the 5:18-mark. Back-to-back three-pointers pulled the Ospreys within two points at 60-58 at the 4:15-mark, but a three-point play from senior DeLascio Dancy pushed the Lions lead back out to 63-58 at the 3:42-mark of the second half. Stockton made it a two-point game again at 63-61 with 1:54 left in regulation, but the Lions seemed to take control of the game for good following back-to-back jumpers from Majekodunmi and Brown. Albright was up 67-61 with 30 seconds left in regulation before a three-pointer from the Ospreys made it a 67-64 game with 24 seconds left. Dancy missed both free throws after being fouled, and Stockton drew a foul on a three-point attempt with four seconds left. All three free throws were made to force overtime.

In overtime, Stockton scored the first four points to go up 71-67 at the 4:01-mark before Smoot ended the run with a free throw. A three-pointer put the Ospreys up 74-68 at the 3:10-mark, and the Lions would get no closer than four points in the rest of the overtime period. A pair of Majekodunmi free throws made it 74-70, but Stockton closed the game on a 9-4 run to seal the win. The Lions went just 1-of-8 from the field in overtime.
