READING, Pa. – A pair of goals by junior
Lauren Haley led the Lions to Albright women's soccer's first win in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament in school history as they earned a 3-0 victory over Hood on Tuesday evening at Shirk Stadium.
The Lions will advance to the semifinals of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament as their record improves to 12-7 on the season. Hood will wrap up their season with an 11-8-2 record after making an appearance in the tournament for the first time.
Just nine minutes into the play-in game, first-year
Emily Serpico found Haley on the right side with a through ball. Haley fired a shot off that got past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 Albright lead. When Blazers kicked off, they traveled down towards Albright's goal and earned a free kick in front of the net. Hood senior Erin Scarborough rocketed a shot to the upper left corner, but Donkus reacted quickly for a big save. With eight minutes left in the first half, sophomore
Autumn Bieber got behind a free kick within goal range, but Hood goalkeeper Lydia Erickson got a hand on it to keep the game 1-0 in favor of the Lions at the half.
The opening minutes of the second half saw a shot from senior
Jillian Lapidus to the bottom corner, causing Erickson to make a diving save. In the 49
th minute, Bieber took a corner kick that ricocheted off a Hood defender for an Albright goal and a 2-0 lead. Donkus came up with three more key saves for the Lions, including one in the 50
th minute that she was able to get her hand on to send over the net. The Lions brought the ball down the right side of the field with just five minutes left and Haley was determined to net the ball. After getting behind the defensive line, Haley shot for her second goal of the night and to lead Albright's offensive scoring on the season with 21 points.
Donkus tallied five saved in total and earned the shutout for her 10
th win of the season in net. Junior Lydia Erickson registered eight saves on the night for the Blazers.
Albright held a 13-8 edge in shots and 10-5 advantage in shots on target. The Lions had six corner kicks to Hood's three.
The Albright women's soccer team will travel to Grantham, Pa. on Thursday to face Messiah College in a 7 p.m. MAC Commonwealth semifinal game.
