Lions Fall in MAC Commonwealth Semifinals at No. 1 Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Albright women's soccer team wraps up the MAC Commonwealth championship tournament in fourth place after falling 6-0 to No. 1 Messiah at Shoemaker Field in the semifinals on Thursday evening.

The Lions end conference competition with an overall record of 12-8.  This marks the sixth straight season and eighth time in the last nine years that Albright, led by head coach Pat Stanco, has qualified for the MAC Commonwealth tournament.  Messiah will continue into the MAC Commonwealth championship with a 17-1-1 record.

Messiah controlled the game with a total of 44 shots to Albright's three.  Facing 11 shots on goal, sophomore Olivia Donkus stopped five in her 70 minutes.  First-year goalkeeper Emily Sellers made her second collegiate appearance in the net for the final 20 minutes of the game and tallied eight saves with no goals against.  Messiah's junior goalkeeper Lydia Ewing earned the win and shutout in net for the Falcons while sophomore Courtney Dunlop also saw time.

The Falcons' scoring began in the ninth minute of the game with a goal from senior Sunny Gelnovatch.  Two more goals were added before the half – one by junior Maddie Kohl, assisted by senior Ellie Lengacher, and the other by sophomore Lindsay Haseltine.  The second half also saw three goals from Messiah, as first-year Shelby Burger picked up a score assisted by senior Brooke Firestone.  Gelnovatch and Kohl each added a second goal for a final score of 6-0.

The Lions posted three shots in the second half, one from junior Lauren Haley, senior Olivia Rider, and sophomore Diza Hasanaj.  Gelnovatch paced Messiah with nine shots, three of them being on target.

Arcadia topped Stevenson in the semifinal game in Glenside, Pa. with a final score of 2-0.  Arcadia and Messiah will face off at Shoemaker Field on Saturday evening for the MAC Commonwealth Championship.

The Lions will now await potential postseason play.
