READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team used a dominant defensive performance to earn a 16-6 win over Farmingdale State on Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium in non-conference play.
With the win, the Lions improve to 5-2 overall on the season as they have now won four-straight games. Meanwhile, the Rams of the Skyline Conference fall to 0-5 on the season.
The opening 2:30 began without any scoring before freshman
Lauren China got the Lions on the board after junior
Kelly Baumann found her in space at the 27:20-mark. Senior
Sophie Bass would extend the lead to 2-0 at the 23:24-mark behind another great pass from Baumann. Baumann then scored her first goal of the game just over two minutes later at the 21:03-mark of the first half, and would find herself with another assist after freshman
Ashleigh Tortorice scored her first goal of the game at the 20:08-mark. Tortorice then struck again on a free-position shot at the 17:33-mark, while Bass then followed with her second goal of the game just 10 seconds later to make it 6-0. The Rams then got their first goal of the game following a long blast on a free-position shot to make it 6-1, and that score would hold until the 11:23-mark when Baumann netted her second of the game to make it 7-1. Farmingdale State made it 7-2 on another free position shot goal at the 7:33-mark, but the Lions answered again as senior
Alexis Filmer made it 8-2 on her second goal of the season.
The Lions picked up right where they left off in the second half as Tortorice tallied her third goal of the game behind a pass on a fast transition from freshman
Maddie Taylor. The goal began a five-goal run for the Lions as freshman
Abbie Moist got on the scoring at the 24:14-mark to make it 10-2. Tortorice capped her scoring day just 59 seconds later to bring the score to 11-2, and Baumann netted her third of the game at the 21:08-mark of the second half to make it 12-2. China then finished off the run to make it 13-2 at the 17:26-mark. With the bench being emptied, the Rams scored three-straight goals to make it 13-5 at the 8:34-mark. However, the Lions answered with two-straight goals of their own from China and Baumann. Each team finished the game with one more goal as China scored with 12 seconds left in the game.
Albright held a 34-22 advantage in shots for the game and a 25-15 advantage in shots on goal as well. The Lions also held a 31-23 advantage in ground balls, while the Rams held a 14-9 advantage in draw controls. Albright forced 31 Rams turnovers in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper
Terae Mason earned the win after making six saves and allowing just two goals in 43:14 minutes of action. Freshman
Nicole Elliott finished the final 16:46 by making three saves and allowing four goals. The Rams split halves with two goaltenders as Iyana Hudson suffered the loss after making five saves with the start, while Emily Rodier made four saves in the second half. Baumann became the second Lions player this week to match the single-game assists record as he posted six behind a 10-point performance. China and Tortorice each netted four goals as well, while Bass finished with four points behind two goals and two assists.
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, March 19
th as they will travel to Clearwater, Florida to face Southern Maine at 10 a.m.
