WESTMINSTER, Md. – Freshman
Ashleigh Tortorice scored the game-winning goal with 3:26 left in the second half to lift the Albright women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 comeback win over McDaniel on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.
With the win, the Lions improve to 2-2 on the season as they wrap up a three-game stretch of facing Centennial Conference opponents. Meanwhile, the Green Terror fall to 0-3 overall on the season.
McDaniel used a lengthy first possession after grabbing the initial draw control win to take a 1-0 lead following a free position shot goal at the 28:18-mark. Junior
Kelly Baumann struck back just 31 seconds later to knot the game at one before the Green Terror tallied back-to-back goals within 21 seconds of each other to take a 3-1 lead at the 26:06-mark. The Lions then began a strong push as freshman
Maddie Taylor made it a 3-2 game following a goal at the 24-minute mark. Albright then began a four-goal run to take their first lead of the game at 6-4 following a Green Terror goal. Freshman
Lauren China began the run after a goal at the 22:39-mark, and Baumann followed with her second goal of the game just 48 seconds later to tie the game at four. Freshman
Taylor Filmer would put the Lions ahead at 5-4 with 19:56 left in the first half, while senior
Sophie Bass capped the run with her first of the game just 52 seconds later. Bass struck again following a Green Terror goal to put the Lions up 7-5 at the 14:53-mark. Unfortunately for the Lions, that would be their last goal of the half as McDaniel ended the half on a five-goal run to take a 10-7 lead into halftime. The Lions had just three shots after the second Bass goal in the first half and five turnovers.
Following the high-scoring first half, it took almost five full minutes before the first goal was tallied as the Green Terror extended its lead to 11-7 at the 25:41-mark on a man-up goal. Albright then began to claw its way back into the game as Bass and Tortorice tallied goals within 48 seconds of each other to make it an 11-9 game at the 22:57-mark. The Lions defense continued to have a strong second half which allowed Baumann to make it a one-goal game at 11-10 with 13:52 left in the half. Baumann then tied the game at 11 on her fourth goal of the game at the 10:58-mark to continue the Lions game-winning run. A Green Terror turnover that was caused by freshman
Abbie Moist then set the Lions go-ahead goal possession as Baumann found Tortorice in front to put Albright ahead for good at 12-11. The Green Terror would have one last chance at tying the game before a turnover gave the Lions possession to run out the final 1:12 of the game.
The Green Terror held a 30-20 shot advantage for the game after holding a 21-11 advantage from the first half. McDaniel also held a 20-15 advantage for shots on goal, and in draw controls at 16-9 following a 13-5 advantage in the first half. Both teams each tallied 10 ground balls. Baumann led the Lions with six points behind four goals and two assists in addition to leading the team with five draw control wins. Bass followed with four points on three goals and one assist, while Tortorice posted two goals. Sophomore goalkeeper
Terae Mason earned the win after making nine saves in the full 60 minutes, while McDaniel goalkeeper Elizabeth Collyer suffered the tough loss after making three saves in the full 60 minutes.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 9
th as they will host Stockton in non-conference play at 1 p.m.
