Baseball Rallies in Game Two to Earn Split with Stevenson

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Albright Lions baseball team (4-9, 1-3 MACC) erased a 6-0 deficit and took the lead for good with a seven-run sixth en route to a 9-7 victory over the Stevenson Mustangs (9-6, 3-2 MACC) in the nightcap of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader on Friday at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale.

Stevenson won game one by a 4-0 score.

Game One
The Mustangs grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third as a pair of singles put two men on with two away before Brady Kessler knocked in a run with an RBI double and Matt Kerber followed with a two-run single.

Junior Will Tokarski (1-2) was dealt the loss for the Lions after allowing four runs on seven hits while fanning four in a complete game effort. James Wiercinski (3-0) allowed two hits to go along with a walk and four strikeouts over five scoreless innings for Stevenson and Jake Vanko got the final six outs to notch his first save of the year.

Trailing 3-0, Albright loaded the bases with two away in the top of the fifth, but Wiercinski got Joe Suppa to ground back to the mound and end the inning.

Freshman Jeremy Brubaker, juniors Jimmie Gentry and Logan Pennypacker and senior Jack Shevlin recorded hits in the contest for head coach Jeff Feiler's squad.

Game Two
The Lions erased a 6-0 deficit and took the lead for good on a go-ahead RBI single from freshman Alex Stump in the sixth en route to a 9-7 victory.

In the afore-mentioned seven run bottom of the sixth, senior Jeff Yordy reached with a two-out single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Stump's RBI single to give Albright a 7-6 lead. Freshman Josh Jacavage followed with a pinch-hit two-run single and extend the lead to 9-6. The Lions trailed 6-2 at the start of the inning, but Austin Roth delivered an RBI single, Suppa plated a run via an RBI groundout and Pennypacker singled, advanced to second on a throwing error charged to Stevenson 3B Alex Kidwiler, stole third and scored the tying run on a throwing error charged to Mustangs C Jordan Moore.

Patrick Sullivan (0-2) was dealt the loss for the Mustangs after allowing four unearned runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning. Sophomore lefty Kyle Smith (1-0) got the win for Albright after giving up an unearned run on four hits to go along with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 IP. Junior Logan Adams allowed a run in the seventh, but got pinch-hitter Jonathan Lugo to line to second and end the game to notch his second save of the year.

Stevenson took a 6-0 lead with six runs in the fourth including an RBI single from Kerber and Billy McAdam was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Lions got a pair back in the home half of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-2 as a walk and a single put two men on before Suppa knocked in a run with an RBI groundout and Yordy delivered an RBI single.

Junior Nick Dinnoncenti got the start for the Lions and received a no-decision after being charged with five runs (two earned) on one hit while walking five in 3 2/3 IP. Joe Thompson gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings of work for the Mustangs.

Pennypacker (3-4, SB, 2 R), Yordy (3-4, RBI, R) and freshman Lew Meringo (3-4) collected multi-hit games for Albright.

The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
