Women's Lacrosse Fends Off Widener, 14-11

CHESTER, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team grinded out a 14-11 win on the road against Widener on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth play for their 10th-straight win.
 
With the win, the Lions maintained a share of first place in the MAC Commonwealth as they improved to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Pride fall to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in MAC Commonwealth play.
 
The Pride struck first on the night as they opened the scoring at the 27:53-mark to take a 1-0 lead. Widener then took advantage of a Lions turnover to extend its lead to 2-0 at the 25:47-mark. Over the next few minutes, Albright began gaining momentum as they registered four shots that all got saved. It was then a man-down situation that put the Lions on the board as freshman Lauren China made it a 2-1 game. Freshman Maddie Taylor then tied the game just 1:10 later after classmate Ashleigh Tortorice found her following a free position attempt. Widener re-gained the lead at the 17:57-mark before junior Kelly Baumann came back just 1:07 after to re-tie the game at three. The Baumann goal started a five-goal as the Lions took a 7-3 lead at the 6:17-mark of the first half. China gave the Lions their first lead of the game at the 11:54-mark before Taylor tallied the next two goals. Senior Sophie Bass then capped the run with an unassisted goal. However, the Pride kept themselves in the game by cutting the lead down to 7-4 with eight seconds left in the first half.
 
Albright got to work quickly in the second half as freshman Taylor Filmer made it an 8-4 game just 48 seconds into the half. The Pride tallied back-to-back goals to cut the Lions lead down to 8-6 at the 23:50-mark, but Taylor snapped the quick burst with a free position shot goal at the 22:39-mark to make it 9-6. Taylor notched her fourth goal of the game at the 21:01-mark to make it 10-6, but the Pride again tallied back-to-back goals to cut the deficit down to 10-8 at the 14:39-mark. Bass snapped the quick run at the 13:17-mark to make it 11-8 before the Pride responded to bring the score to 11-9 at the 11:15-mark. Taylor responded to the Pride goal by scoring her fifth goal of the evening to make it a 12-9 game, and would cap her breakout night with her sixth goal on a free position shot at the 8:39-mark. Widener made one last charge at the Lions as they tallied back-to-back goals within 29 seconds of each other to make it a 13-11 game with 5:59 left in regulation. China would then end any hope of a Pride rally with her fourth goal of the game at the 3:25-mark to make it 14-11.
 
The Lions held a 33-26 shot advantage for the game, and a 29-23 advantage in shots on goal. Albright also held a slight advantage in ground balls at 19-18, and draw controls at 15-12. Taylor registered a season-high six goals, while China followed with four goals. Bass posted three points behind two goals and one assist in addition to tallying nine draw controls. Baumann and Taylor Filmer each posted a goal, while Tortorice added an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Terae Mason earned the win after making 12 saves in the full 60 minutes. Pride goalkeeper Maddie Medve suffered the loss after making 15 saves in the full 60 minutes,
 
Albright will return to action on Saturday, April 13th as they will host Lebanon Valley for senior day at 12 p.m.
