READING, Pa. – Behind a 10-goal second quarter, the Albright Lions men's lacrosse team picked up a dominant 21-9 win over Alvernia on Wednesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play.
The Lions earn their first win of the season as they improve to 1-11 overall, and 1-5 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves fall to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
Albright started fast as they went up 1-0 just 31 seconds in on an unassisted goal from freshman
Cole Genneken. The Lions then went up 2-0 at the 10:43-mark after freshman
Matt Schneider notched an unassisted goal of his own. The Golden Wolves responded to make it a 2-1 game at the 8:21-mark, and the score would remain the same into the second quarter. Albright controlled play for the majority of the rest of the first quarter, but were unable to extend its lead. An Alvernia turnover led to the Lions third goal of the game at the 13:48-mark of the second quarter, as sophomore
Carson Babcock broke onto the scoresheet. The goal started a four score run for the Lions as Genneken and freshman
Alex McKendry scored within 27 seconds of each other to make it a 5-1 game at the 12:46-mark. Junior
Ryan Wilburn would cap the run at the 11:51-mark to give the Lions a 6-1 lead. McKendry then responded to a Golden Wolves goal with his second of the game at the 7:41-mark before the Lions scored five goals in the final 2:05 of the first half after an Alvernia goal to take a 12-3 lead into halftime. McKendry opened the run with his third goal of the half, and was followed by senior
Kevin Goetz just 21 seconds later. A Golden Wolves penalty following the ensuing faceoff allowed the Lions to grab a man-up goal, courtesy of sophomore
Shane Early. Another Alvernia penalty led to a second-straight man-up goal, this time from sophomore
Alex Miller. Babcock capped the run on a goal with 19 seconds left in the first half following a fast clear attempt.
Following nearly seven minutes of action without a goal to begin the second half, sophomore
Ethan Gain grabbed the Lions sixth unanswered goal at the 6:34-mark. The Lions then responded to a Golden Wolves goal with three-straight goals to take a 16-4 lead into the final quarter. Wilburn tallied his second goal of the game at the 2:49-mark before Early and Genneken capped the run with two goals in the span of 38 seconds. McKendry would snap a back-to-back goal stretch from Alvernia at the 9:15-mark, and sophomore
Connor Graser responded to another Golden Wolve goal to make it am 18-7 game at the 7:25-mark. Genneken notched his third goal of the game just 21 seconds later, and McKendry then capped his big day to score the Lions 20
th goal of the game at the 4:46-mark. Gain would then find Babcock again for the Lions final goal of the day at the 3:55-mark of the fourth quarter. The 21 goals were the most goals in a game for the Lions since they scored 21 against Alvernia in April 2013.
The Lions held a 58-33 shot advantage for the game, and a 40-20 shots on goal advantage. Albright also held a 41-33 advantage in ground balls, and won 23 of the 34 faceoffs for the game. 10 different Lions scored on the afternoon, led by McKendry with a season-high five goals. Gain led the Lions with six points behind five assists and one goal, while Genneken finished with four goals. Babcock added five points behind three goals and two assists. Senior goalkeeper
Conor Scafidi earned the win after making 11 saves in 56:46 of action, while Golden Wolves goalkeeper Jacob O'Donnell suffered the loss after making 19 saves in the full 60 minutes of action.
Albright will return to action on Wednesday, April 24
th as they will host Arcadia for senior night at 7 p.m.
