READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions softball team (21-15) scored 23 runs in two games and extended its winning streak to 10 games with a sweep of the Elizabethtown Blue Jays (16-20) on Wednesday afternoon at Albright Softball Field.
Albright captured game one by a score of 9-0 in five innings and used a five-run first en route to a 14-6 win in six innings in game two.
Junior
Brooke Yerger went 5-6 on the day and tied the single season program record for hits with 49.
Game One
The Lions grabbed an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the second as a single and a walk started the inning before senior
Stephany Courtney plated a run via an RBI single and Yerger struck later in the frame with a two-run double.
Freshman
Allison Melahn (13-4) gave up four hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts over five shutout innings and earned the win for Albright. Elizabethtown's Amber Sergas (8-9) took the loss after allowing nine runs (five earned) on six hits while walking four in 3 1/3 IP.
Albright broke the game open with five runs in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead as a pair of errors in the inning allowed runs to score, senior
Kelly Cembrale knocked in a run with an RBI groundout and senior
Stephanie Pomante added a sac fly.
Courtney (2-2, 2B, RBI, 2 R) and Yerger (2-2, 2B, SB, 2 RBI, R) both recorded multi-hit games for the Lions, while Cembrale added a hit, RBI and scored a run.
Game Two
Albright grabbed an early 5-0 lead with the afore-mentioned five-run first and held off a rally from the Blue Jays in the middle innings before breaking the game open en route to the 14-6 win.
The Lions led 8-5 in the top of the fifth and Elizabethtown had a runner at second with two outs in the inning, but sophomore
Lynsie Grant got Jillian Meitzler to ground into a fielder's choice and end the frame.
Six different Lions registered multi-hit games as part of a season-high 19 hit attack: Cembrale (2-3, 2 RBI), senior
Corinne Garuffe (3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, R), junior
Abigail Lord (3-4, SB, 2 R), Pomante (3-5, 3 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R), Sears (3-5, 2 R) and Yerger (3-4, 2 RBI, 2 SB, 2 R). The 14 runs also marked a season-high for Albright.
Sears (6-8) allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits to go along with two walks and a strikeout in 4 2/3 IP to recorded the win for the Lions, while Grant struck out one in 1 1/3 IP of relief to notch her first save.
The first five batters reached in the first inning for Albright as senior
Jordan Chell delivered a two-run single and Pomante knocked in a pair with a two-run double, while Yerger drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 5-0 game.
Meitzler's RBI single in the top of the second put the Blue Jays on the board, but the Lions quickly answered as Sears reached with a one-out single, advanced to third on a double and scored on Courtney's RBI fielder's choice to extend the lead to 6-1. Chell tallied an RBI groundout in the third and Yerger came through with an RBI single in the home half of the fourth to stretch the lead to 8-3 before Elizabethtown got a pair back in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-5. Albright struck back once again with three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Pomante delivered an RBI double, Garuffe knocked in a run with an RBI single and Cembrale followed with a two-run single. Kasey Souder reached on an error in the sixth and Lord singled to put two runners on before Garuffe plated both with a two-run double into the left centerfield gap to give the Lions a 14-6 win.
Albright closes out the regular season on Saturday, April 27 at Messiah with first pitch of game one set for 2 p.m.
