WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior
Sophie Bass became the Albright women's lacrosse all-time career leader in assists as the Lions dominated Lycoming by a score of 20-5 on Wednesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play.
The record was previously held by Erin Farrell at 61 career assists. With the win, the Lions extend their program-record winning streak to eight games as they improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 2-9 overall with a 0-3 mark in conference play.
The Lions opened the scoring at the 28:08-mark following a Warriors turnover as Bass made it 1-0 on an unassisted goal. Lycoming struck back just 42 seconds later after a draw control win, but that would be as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. The Lions went on a four-goal run to take a 5-1 lead at the 22:36-mark that started with a second goal from Bass at the 26:19-mark. Freshman
Taylor Filmer would follow at the 25:55-mark with his first goal of the game before assisting on the next goal. Freshman
Ashleigh Tortorice notched the third and fourth goal of the run on assists from Filmer and Bass. The Warriors then tallied back-to-back goals to cut the lead down to 5-3 at the 18:17-mark, but the Lions scored five unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. Tortorice scored the first three goals of the run on two assists from junior
Kelly Baumann, and one from Bass. Baumann then followed with the fourth goal of the run at the 5:31-mark after causing a turnover in the Lions offensive zone. Freshman
Lauren China would tally the final goal of the first half at the 2:21-mark as Bass found her to set the assist record.
Bass continued the Lions scoring run into the second half as she scored 34 seconds in to make it an 11-3 game before notching a second-straight goal to bring the score to 12-3 at the 25:57-mark. Freshman
Maddie Taylor then got in on the scoring at the 24:06-mark on another assist from Bass, and
Taylor Filmer would follow at the 19:47-mark to make it a 14-3 game. Filmer would follow with another goal to make it 15-3 at the 15:32-mark, and Tortorice would cap the 11-goal run just under two minutes later to bring the score to 16-3. Following a Warriors goal, Bass and Baumann extended the Lions lead out to 18-4 with back-to-back goals within 1:02 of each other.
Taylor Filmer would score her fourth and final goal of the game to make it 19-4 at the 5:57-mark of the second half, and Bass finished the scoring on the day with 19 seconds left.
The Lions held a sizable 38-18 shot advantage for the game after out-shooting the Warriors 26-8 in the first half. Albright also held a 31-15 shots on goal advantage, and a 20-12 advantage in ground balls. The Warriors held a 16-11 draw control advantage behind 14 coming from Kelly McGinniss, the leader in all of Division III in draw control wins per game. In addition to setting the Lions career assist record, Bass fell one point short of tying the program single-game points record with 11 behind six goals and five assists. Tortorice recorded a career-high six goals, while Baumann posted six points behind two goals and four assists.
Taylor Filmer recorded five points behind four goals and one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper
Terae Mason earned the win after making nine saves and allowing just five goals in 56:04 of action. Warriors goalkeeper Jordyn Atland suffered the loss after making 11 saves in the full 60 minutes of action.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, April 6
th when they will host four-time defending league champion Messiah at 1 p.m. with first place on the line in the MAC Commonwealth.
