READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions baseball team (7-15, 4-7 MACC) scored 15 runs on 17 hits over two games en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Widener Pride (9-17-1, 3-8 MACC) on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Kelchner Field in Reading.
Albright won game one by a score of 6-3 and rallied to take game two by a score of 9-5.
This marks the first series win over Widener since taking two of three in 2008.
Game One
The Lions took the lead for good with a three-run third as a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases before freshman
Jeremy Brubaker knocked in a pair with a go-ahead two-run single. Brubaker stole second and junior
Logan Adams scampered home on a throwing error charged to Widener starter Dylan Peiffer.
Peiffer (3-2) was dealt the loss for the Pride after allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits to go along with a walk and five strikeouts in six innings of work.
Junior
Will Tokarski (2-3) earned the win for the Lions after giving up two runs on eight hits while walking two and fanning three in six innings of work. RHP
Jeff Yordy (0.2 IP, 4 H, R, ER) and LHP
Daron Pijanowski (SV, 0.1 IP, K) combined to work the seventh for the Lions and Pijanowksi earned his first save of the year.
Austin Roth and
Logan Pennypacker reached with consecutive singles for Albright in the fourth and junior
Jimmie Gentry hit a three-run blast to left center to extend the lead to 6-1. Widener's Stephen DeBellis struck with an RBI double in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-3 and the Pride had the bases loaded with two outs in the frame, but Pijanowski came on in relief of Yordy and fanned Ryan Bennett on three pitches to end the game.
Adams (2-3, R), Brubaker (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, SB) and Pennypacker (3-3, 2 R) recorded multi-hit games for the Lions.
Game Two
Yordy hit two home runs and drove in five runs as Albright rallied for a 9-5 victory in game two.
The Lions trailed 4-1 in the home half of the third when Yordy stepped to the plate with two on and nobody out and deposited a three-run shot over the left field fence to tie things at four apiece. Widener quickly answered with a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI triple from Matt Samson, but Gentry led off the fifth for the Lions with a single and Yordy's second blast of the day gave the Lions the lead for good at 6-5. In the home half of the sixth, Gentry reached on an error, advanced to third on Yordy's double and scored on Adams' sac fly before Brubaker hit a two-run blast of his own to knock in a couple of insurance runs and extend the Lions' lead to 9-5.
Junior
Shaun O'Reilly (1-2) surrendered just one hit while walking one and fanning two over four shutout innings of relief to earn the win for head coach Jeff Feiler's squad.
Joey Norton (0-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits to go along with three walks and four strikeouts over 4 2/3 IP and was dealt the loss for the Pride.
Each team struck for a run in the first inning including a sac fly from Adams, but Widener took a 4-1 lead with three in the top of the second including an RBI triple from Samson and an RBI single from Brandon Reis.
Junior
Nick Dinnocenti got the start for the Lions and received a no-decision after giving up five runs on six hits in three plus innings of work.
Gentry (3-4, 3 R) and Yordy (3-3, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R) tallied three hits apiece for Albright, while Pennypacker added a hit and scored two runs.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon at Widener Baseball Field with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
