Field Hockey Unable to Overcome Early Deficit Against Stockton

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team was unable to overcome an early first period deficit as they fell 3-1 to Stockton on Sunday afternoon at Shirk Stadium in non-conference play.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 0-2 overall after the first weekend of play. Meanwhile, the defending ECAC champion Ospreys improve to 2-0 after a pair of wins over MAC Commonwealth teams.

The Lions came out strong and created a few chances in the opening minutes of the first period. Albright had two chances turned away by the Ospreys goalkeeper to keep the game scoreless. Stockton then would break through in the sixth minute to take a 1-0 lead off their first shot of the game. Gianna Morganti took a long pass in front and beat Lions goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe, who came out of the net to try and kick the ball away. The Ospreys then extended their lead out to 2-0 at the 8:00-mark after Morganti struck again after she got open space in front of the net to move around and beat Schoppe 1-on-1. The second period saw the Ospreys get some chances off penalty corner opportunities, but Schoppe was there each time to keep the deficit at two. Albright nearly got on the scoreboard with under two minutes left in the second period as senior Kaley Donmoyer pushed the ball in the net, but it was waved off after her stick was deemed to be used in a dangerous way.

The third period was all Ospreys as they outshot the Lions 11-1, but Schoppe again was able to keep them off the scoreboard. Schoppe made three tough saves in a span 1:42 following an Ospreys penalty corner. However, the Ospreys finally broke through in fourth period after Madison Maguire scored after she collected a rebound from a previous shot. Junior Jennifer Crumling would break the shutout in the 57th minute after collecting a pass from the right side from classmate Bailey Lehman.

Stockton outshot the Lions 19-8 overall after holding a 15-2 advantage in the second half. The Ospreys held a 14-7 advantage in shots on goal, and a 9-2 mark in penalty corners. Schoppe suffered the loss despite a strong 11 saves in 60 minutes, while Emily Gilligan earned the win for the Ospreys after making six saves in the full 60 minutes.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday, September 4th as they will host Delaware Valley at 4 p.m.
