IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Albright field hockey team was dealt a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Immaculata in overtime on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 3-6 on the season overall as they open MAC Commonwealth play on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Mighty Macs improve to 4-5 overall after winning just one game all of last season.
The Lions would hound the Mighty Macs zone early in the contest as they received three penalty corners in the first quarter and six shots. However, Immaculata goalkeeper Randie Kuhar would keep the Lions off the board despite the pressure. After three minutes of no shots, the Mighty Macs would score on their second shot of the game in the 19
th minute of the game after Maddy Edwards buried a rebound from an initial shot off a penalty corner opportunity. The Lions began to control play in their offensive zone again as they tallied four more shots after the Immaculata goal, but Kuhar continued to keep Albright off the board into halftime.
Albright nearly got on the board early in the third quarter in the 33
rd minute as they tallied three shots in front of the net in a four-second span from junior
Jennifer Crumling and senior
Kaley Donmoyer, but again Kuhar kept the shutout going. Immaculata would enter the fourth quarter still clinging to a 1-0 lead despite the Lions outshooting the Mighty Macs 9-0 in the third quarter. Albright finally broke the scoreboard in the 52
nd minute when Donmoyer shot the ball through traffic in front of the net to tie the game at one. Albright would not register a shot on net for the rest of the fourth quarter, but they had to make two big stands in the final seconds to get the game into overtime. Immaculata received back-to-back penalty corners with one being played out after time expired. On the final corner, the Mighty Macs ripped three-straight shots off, but Lions junior goalkeeper
Brynne Schoppe stood tall and kept Immaculata off the board to force overtime. The Lions received the first penalty corner of overtime, but were unable to convert as junior
Bailey Lehman had a blast from the top circle hit the pad of Kuhar. Schoppe turned away a Mighty Macs shot on their first penalty corner of overtime, but Immaculata scored the game-winner at the 64:23-mark. Willa Thompson somehow kept the ball from going out of bounds on the end line, and would find an open Colleen Bradley in front to score.
The Lions held a sizable 29-7 shot advantage, and an 18-7 advantage for shots on goal. Albright also held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners. Schoppe suffered the loss after making five saves in the full action. Kuhar turned in a valiant 16-save effort to steal the win for the Mighty Macs. Donmoyer has now scored in two of the last three Lions games.
Albright will return to action on Friday, September 27
