Second Half Dooms Field Hockey in Loss to Lynchburg

READING, Pa. – A five-goal second half from Lynchburg helped sink the Albright Lions field hockey team by a score of 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Shirk Stadium in non-conference play.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 1-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the Hornets improve to 2-1 after dropping a game in a shootout to Alvernia yesterday.

The first few minutes went without much action until the Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute after converting a penalty corner opportunity. However, two minutes later the Lions would knot the score at one after junior Bailey Lehman ripped a penalty stroke past Hornets goalkeeper, Laurel Nicks. Lynchburg would have a few shots turned away to close out the first quarter. The Hornets would then go up 2-1 in the 22nd minute after converting off another penalty corner. The Lions were held without a shot during the entire second quarter.

The Hornets would come out firing as they scored two goals within 46 seconds of each other to take a 4-1 lead. Lynchburg then came on another rush in the 42nd minute and converted to go up 5-1. Lynchburg would score one more time in the third quarter to take a 6-1 lead on a tap-in goal before Lehman ended the run early in the fourth quarter after she ripped the ball from the left side after receiving a pass from senior Kaley Donmoyer. Lynchburg then came back with momentum and received three penalty corner opportunities with the third resulting in the Hornets seventh goal of the day.

Lynchburg held a sizable 21-4 shot advantage and a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Hornets also held a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners with eight of them coming in the second half. With two goals today, Lehman has scored four goals in four games for the Lions. Junior goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe suffered the loss after making three saves in 43:38 minutes of action. Freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Johnson made her debut and saved four shots in the final 16:22 of action. Nicks earned the win after making one save in 54:58 of action.

The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, September 11th as they will host York (Pa.) at 4 p.m.
