Dejah Terrell, Albright women's basketball picked up their 15
th consecutive win this season in an 83-72 conference victory against Widener on Wednesday evening.
The Lions hold sole possession of first place in the MAC Commonwealth and continue their unbeaten season with a 15-0 record and 6-0 record in the conference. Widener falls to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in the MAC Commonwealth.
Terrell sets a new personal-best after scoring 33 points and also picked up 17 rebounds in the victory for a double-double. The Reading, Pa. native leads the MAC Commonwealth scoring average by over two points with 21.9 points per game. Classmate
Maggie O'Hare added 19 points behind going 7-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-8 from deep. Also controlling the boards for the Lions was sophomore
Gabby Boggs who picked up 12 rebounds and ranks second in the conference with 11.7 rebounds per game and third in field goal percentage with 54.4 percent.
The Lions opened the game on a 10-0 run, which included two three-pointers from Terrell. Responding with a 9-3 run of their own, the Pride closed Albright's lead to just four points, 13-9, at the 4:36-mark. A good layup by sophomore
Abby Gaffney brought the first quarter to an end with the Lions leading 19-13.
O'Hare scored five points within the first two minutes of the second quarter for the Lions and headed the scoring in the quarter with eight points. Widener outscored Albright 23-21 in the quarter, but the Lions went into the locker rooms with a 40-36 lead after senior
Hailey Dayton sunk a three with 41 seconds left in the half.
Albright returned to the court with the same momentum they left with, extending the lead to 11 points by the end of the third quarter, 66-55. The Lions shot 42.9 percent in the third behind going 9-of-21 from the floor and went 6-of-11 from deep for 54.6 percent.
A long range score from Widener's Devan Rimmer ignited the final quarter of the game, lessening Albright's lead to eight points. On defense, Boggs came up big at the 5:26-mark with a blocked layup and rebound for the Lions. This was followed by a block from O'Hare two minutes later on a jump shot. With 17 points from each team in the fourth, the Lions ended the game with an 11 point lead for a final score of 83-72.
The Lions shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the floor and an impressive 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from beyond the three-point line while going 50 percent (7-of-14) on free throws. Albright recorded 10 fast break points and 11 points off second chances. Also going 50 percent (8-of-16) from the line, the Pride shot 36.3 percent (29-of-80) from the floor and 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from three. Widener scored 28 points off 22 Albright turnovers.
Devan Rimmer and Erin Phelan paced the Pride's offense with 18 points apiece and Kyra Schenk registered a double-double with eleven rebounds and points. Madison Ireland, the leader of the MAC Commonwealth in assists, tallied seven on the night.
Albright will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 18 for a 5 p.m. conference game at Messiah.
