FREDERICK, Md. – A strong defense led the Albright women's basketball team to a 74-39 road victory at Hood on Saturday afternoon. The Lions improve to 17-1 overall and 8-1 in MAC Commonwealth play and the Blazers fall to 4-14 on the season and 0-9 in the conference.
Sophomore
Dejah Terrell paced the Lions' scoring with 24 points and pulled down 19 rebounds for a double-double. Terrell continues to lead MAC Commonwealth scoring with 22.8 points per game and is second in rebounding with 12.4 per game, while classmate
Gabby Boggs sits in third with 11.8 rebounds per game. In the victory, Boggs added a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds behind shooting 5-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the line.
Recording 13 points in the conference win, sophomore
Amina Rauf shot 5-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Classmate
Brady Wassel scored nine points and registered six rebounds, and senior
Hailey Dayton led the Lions in assists with six while picking up five points and eight rebounds. Sophomore
Emma Blewett recorded a career-high four rebounds.
The opening five minutes of the contest saw a 12-0 Albright run featuring three-pointers from Wassel and sophomore
Maggie O'Hare. Boggs, Rauf, and Terrell each added four points in the first quarter while Albright held Hood to just eight points. Hood started the scoring in the second quarter, which was responded to by three consecutive layups from Terrell. Going into the locker rooms, Albright held a 26 point lead, 44-18.
A 5-0 Albright run again started the third quarter as Albright increased the lead to 35 points and held the Blazers to eight points. Each team registered 13 points in the fourth quarter and Blewett kicked off the last 10 minutes of the game with a fast break layup. Dayton led the quarter's scoring with five points, three coming from beyond the arc with 26 seconds left in the game.
Albright shot 32.5 percent (25-of-77) from the floor in the victory, behind going 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from beyond the arc and 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the line. Albright's defense kept Hood to 14-of-62 (22.6%) from the floor, 2-of-11 (18.2%) from deep, and 9-of-20 (45%) on free throws. The Lions scored 30 points from inside the paint and had 18 points off 20 Hood turnovers.
Hood's Celestria Hill paced the Blazers' scoring with 10 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Morgan Anderson led the team with nine rebounds and added seven points.
The Lions are back in action at the Bollman Center on Wednesday, Jan. 29 for an 8 p.m. conference game against Arcadia.
