Second Half Rally Lifts Men's Hoops Over Lycoming, 73-68

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Albright Lions men's basketball team used a second half surge to earn a come from behind 73-68 win on the road against Lycoming on Wednesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play.

With the win, the Lions match their win total from a season ago by improving to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Junior Samuel Majekodunmi led the Lions with a team-high 15 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Majekodunmi also went 6-of-6 from the free throw line, which turned out to be most important down the stretch. Majekodunmi now sits six points away from becoming the 39th player in program history to reach 1,000 points for their career.

Classmate Sidney Brown posted 14 points behind going 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, while adding two rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Corey Simmons provided a big spark from the bench for the second-straight game with a season-high 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, and grabbed five rebounds. Junior Isaiah Harris recorded 12 points and three rebounds, while classmate Troy Smoot tallied eight points and four assists in the win.

The Lions started slow from the field as they tallied just one field goal in the first 4:19 of the contest. That allowed the Warriors to take an early 6-2 lead at the 16:01-mark in the first half. A three-pointer from Brown and a jumper from Majekodunmi gave the Lions their first lead of the game at 7-6, but the Warriors came back with four-straight points of their own to take a 10-7 lead at the 14:15-mark. Back-to-back three-pointers from senior DeLascio Dancy and Majekodunmi put the Lions back up at 13-10 with 13:13 left in the first half before the Warriors came back with four-straight points again to go up 14-13. Brown hit back-to-back three-pointers to put the Lions up 19-17 at the 11:14-mark, but the Warriors used a 10-2 run to take a 27-22 lead at the 7:13-mark. Brown hit his fourth three-pointer of the half to make it a 31-28 game before the Warriors took their largest lead of the game with a 12-2 run at 43-30 with 1:12 left in the first half. Harris made a pair of free throws with four seconds left to cut the lead down to 43-32 at halftime.

Lycoming held a 48-35 lead at the 17:30-mark, but the Lions began building momentum with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit down to 50-44 at the 13:52-mark that was capped by a three-pointer from Smoot. Albright got within five points at 52-47 at the 11:31-mark of the second half following a layup from Simmons until the Warriors used a 6-2 run to take a 58-48 lead with 9:16 left in the second half. Simmons continued to stay hot from the field as he scored eight points of a 13-2 Lions run to give Albright its first lead since the 8:37-mark of the first half at 62-60. A three-pointer from sophomore Mark Brinkley Jr. put the Lions up 65-62 with 4:29 left in regulation, but Lycoming scored six-straight points to go up 68-65 with 2:16 left in regulation. However, Albright scored the final eight points of the game behind going 6-of-6 from the free throw line to steal the win.

The Lions shot 17-of-26 (65.4%) from the free throw line, and forced 16 Warrior turnovers. Meanwhile, the Warriors shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field after shooting 54.8 percent in the first half. Lycoming went 6-of-20 (30%) from beyond the arc, and shot a near perfect 8-of-9 (88.9%) from the free throw line. Lycoming held a 39-33 rebounding advantage and got 23 points from its bench.
