WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Albright Lions baseball team (0-2) opened up 2020 action at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy on Sunday as Marymount University (4-2) swept the doubleheader.
Game One
The Lions fell to Marymount in the first game, 10-9, after a late rally from Marymount in the fifth inning.
Marymount started off the scoring as Bill Wojcik homered to left field in the second inning.
In the third, Albright's bases were loaded and sophomore Jeremy Brubaker scored on a bases loaded walk with senior Jimmie Gentry at the plate.
Marymount tallied another run in the fourth as Ryan Maylie singled up the middle to bring Wojcik in.
The Lions scored two runs in the fifth inning after senior Logan Pennypacker came home on a Marymount throwing error to tie the game at two apiece. Gentry hit the first Lions' homer of the season and brought in Sklenarik to put the Lions up 4-2.
Marymount rallied with six total runs in the fifth inning. Mike Ferrara was hit by a pitch for an RBI and James DiGiul singled to left field. Wojcik hit his second homer on the day with full bases for a score of 8-4.
Albright pressed on in the seventh to tie the game 9-9, as the inning opened with Gentry hitting a single to right field for an RBI and Logan Adams registered an RBI to bring in Pennypacker. Sophomore Josh Jacavage followed with a three-run homerun to center field to dramatically tie the game. In the bottom of inning, Marymount's Ryan Lee singled with bases loaded to win the game.
Sophomore Willie Kimmel III charged with the loss after facing five batters and Matthew Schneider earned the win for Marymount after striking out the only batter he faced.
Game Two
In game two, the Lions were edged 6-5 after a run in the sixth inning secured the win for Marymount.
Albright took an early 2-0 lead in the first with an RBI from both Sklenarik and Brubaker.
Marymount tied up the game in the second inning as Alex Lemery reached on a Lions' error and Ryan Maylie scored. Casey Baker stole home for the Saints for a score of 2-2.
The third inning saw Jack Shevlin ground out to bring in Gentry in for a Lions lead 3-2. Marymount responded with three runs in their half of the inning as Wojcik earned two RBI and DiGuil had an RBI for a score of 5-3 in favor of the Saints.
Albright tied the game in the fifth inning after sophomore Will Algard drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Jacavage scored on a balk.
Marymount rallied yet again in the sixth inning and locked up its second win on the day after Bryce Smith doubled for an RBI and final score of 6-5.
Brubaker had the loss for the Lions after pitching two innings and facing 10 batters. Schneider earned the win again for the Saints by fanning four of the eight batters he faced.
Gentry registered two hits and four RBI in the first game to lead the Lions, while both Pennypacker and Brubaker recorded two hits in game two.
Albright baseball will open at home on Saturday, Feb. 29 for a doubleheader against Wilson College starting at 12 p.m.
