READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions baseball team won a 6-5 non-conference match over Cairn at Kelchner Field on Wednesday afternoon that was shortened due to darkness.
With the win, the Lions pick up their third-straight win as they improve to 3-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Highlanders fall to 3-6 overall.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Lions put runners at first and second with one out in the bottom half of the inning. A single from senior
Brandon Daubert loaded the bases with two outs, and a wild pitch in the next at-bat brought home two runs to put the Lions up 2-0. Cairn quickly answered back with a home run from the first batter in the top of the second to make it a 2-1 game. Albright extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth as they scored three runs on two hits. Daubert began the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt from the pitcher with one out. Daubert then stole third before eventually coming home on a passed ball. Nick Sklenarik drove in stump with a two-out RBI single to left field.
Albright worked its way out of a second and third base jam in the top of the fifth, but gave up three runs to the Highlanders in the top of the sixth to make it a 5-4 game. Cairn opened the inning by putting runners on second and third before scoring the runs on a fielding error, and single to centerfield. The Highlanders got one more run on single to right field, but the runner was thrown out trying to extend a single into a double. Albright eventually got out of the inning with a foul out. The Highlanders threatened again in the top of the seventh as they put their first two runners on with a single and a walk. Pennypacker was able to save a run for the Lions as he threw out a Highlander runner trying to score on a single in the next at-bat. However, Cairn was able to tie the game by taking advantage of a wild pitch with two outs. The Lions had their first two runners retired in the bottom of the seventh before singles from seniors
Jimmie Gentry and
Logan Adams kept the inning alive. Daubert came through with a RBI single to left field to put the Lions ahead 6-5. Cairn was able to advance a runner to second base in the top of the eighth, but the runner was picked off with two outs to end the inning. After the Lions were retired in the bottom half of the eighth, the game was called due to darkness in the top of the ninth with the Highlanders batting.
Daubert finished the day 2-of-3 from the plate with a RBI, and run scored. Sklenarik went 2-of-4 from the plate as well, while also tallying a RBI and scoring a run. Gentry scored two runs and Pennypacker drew a pair of walks. Sophomore
Willie Kimmel III started the game for the Lions on the mound and threw the first two innings, while giving up one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore
Connor Trower earned the win in his Lions debut after throwing 1.2 shutout innings, and striking out a pair. Cairn starting pitcher, Ben Spadea, suffered the loss after giving up five runs (all earned) on four hits. Spadea struck out three and walked four batters.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 7
th as they will travel to face Scranton for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
