Men's Lacrosse Downed by Immaculata, 13-10

READING, Pa. – The Albright men's lacrosse team dropped a back and forth 13-10 contest to Immaculata at Shirk Stadium on Thursday afternoon in non-conference play.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-3 overall on the season. Meanwhile, the Mighty Macs of the Atlantic East Conference earn their first win of the season as they move to 1-2 on the year.

Albright forced a turnover on the Mighty Macs opening possession and cashed in at the 13:43-mark of the first quarter when sophomore Alex McKendry ripped a shot from 15 yards out to put the Lions up 1-0. McKendry then found Cole Genneken at the 11:34-mark to extend the Lions lead to 2-0 early on in the contest. The Mighty Macs got on the board at the 9:30-mark of the first quarter, but junior John Gilbert put the Lions back up two goals at 3-1 as he grabbed a rebound in front of the cage and put it into the net. Immaculata tallied back-to-back goals within 36 seconds of each other to tie the game at three before Genneken put the Lions back on top at the 5:44-mark with his second goal of the quarter. However, Immaculata re-tied the game at four on a man-up opportunity at the 4:40-mark, and would take their first lead of the game at 5-4 with 2:18 left in the first quarter. The Mighty Macs extended their lead to 6-4 with a goal at the 13:46-mark of the second quarter, and continued to hold the Lions off the scoreboard. Albright ended just over a 12-minute span without a goal at the 7:30-mark of the second quarter when sophomore Eric Broadway found a wide open first-year Harrison Bodwell for his first goal of the game. Gilbert tied the game at six just over a minute later at the 6:19-mark after the Lions quickly converted a successful clear following a Mighty Macs turnover. Immaculata took the lead back at 7-6 with 4:54 left in the first half, and kept the Lions off the board to carry the lead into halftime. Albright had multiple good scoring chances saved with just over three minutes left in the quarter.

The Lions started strong in the third quarter as Broadway netted his first of the game at the 13:30-mark to tie the score at seven. Junior Connor Graser led a successful clear and found Genneken, who found Broadway open on the right side of the net. The Mighty Macs took the lead back at the 11:10-mark before McKendry tied the game again on a right corner rip at the 9:59-mark. The goal from McKendry began a run of three-straight goals for the Lions as they took a 10-8 lead at the 8:44-mark of the third quarter. Broadway gave the Lions the lead at the 9:04-mark on a man-up opportunity before sophomore Jacob Cunningham followed with a man-up goal of his own. However, the Mighty Macs closed the third quarter out with five-straight goals to go up 13-10. The Lions mounted heavy pressure on Immaculata early in the fourth quarter as they registered seven shots in the first three minutes, but were unable to get past the Mighty Mac goalkeeper. Genneken nearly ended the scoring drought at the 6:01-mark with a shot that hit the post. Albright continued to control play before ultimately running out of time as the Mighty Macs shut the Lions out in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

Albright held a 46-36 advantage in shots after out-shooting the Mighty Macs 19-5 in the fourth quarter. Immaculata held a 27-25 edge in shots on goal, and a slight 13-12 advantage in faceoff wins. The Lions held a 39-33 advantage in ground balls on the afternoon. First-year goalkeeper Liam Ferry suffered the loss despite making 14 saves in the full 60 minutes. Immaculata goalkeeper Denton States earned the win with 15 saves behind a big fourth quarter. Broadway registered a career-high five points for the Lions behind two goals and three assists. McKendry and Genneken each tallied four points behind two goals and two assists. Graser led the Lions with six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
