ITHACA, N.Y. – The Albright women's basketball team saw its 2019-20 season come to a close after falling to Williams College 68-46 on Friday evening at Ithaca College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Albright concludes its run with a record of 22-6 and Williams (19-8) will play the winner of Ithaca/New England College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow evening at 5 p.m.
Sophomore
Brady Wassel led the Lions with 15 points behind going 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Wassel added five rebounds and two assists in the matchup. Classmate
Gabby Boggs registered a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds on the night, and senior
Hailey Dayton paced the squad with three assists.
Albright got on the board first off a three-pointer from Wassel and Williams responded with two consecutive layups for an Ephs' lead 4-3. The Lions' largest lead of five points in the game came at the 2:50-mark for a score of 11-6. Williams then started on a 5-0 run to tie the game 11-11 with one minute on the clock, and ended the quarter on an 8-2 run to gain the lead 14-13 after the first 10 minutes. In the opening three minutes of the second quarter, the Ephs kicked off on another 10-2 run for a 24-15 lead by the 7:26-mark. Shooting 60 percent in the quarter, Williams was able to hold a strong nine-point lead going into the locker rooms.
Williams added another 34 points in the second half of the game to Albright's 21 for a final score of 68-46 in favor of the Ephs. In a low-scoring third quarter, the Albright defense was able to hold its opponents to just 10 points, however, the Lions only added seven points themselves. Sophomores
Maggie O'Hare,
Dejah Terrell, and
Amina Rauf each added a block in the quarter on defense. Boggs led the second half with 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lions as the Ephs pulled away again in the fourth quarter to secure the victory and advance in the tournament.
For the Ephs, Mikaela Topper scored a game-high 23 points in the win behind shooting 10-of-17 from the floor, 2-of-4 from three, and 1-of-2 from the line. With 12 points, Maggie Meehan followed while Maddy Mandyck and Katie Brule each tallied nine rebounds. Seven Ephs registered points on the night in the win.
Albright shot 20-of-62 (32.3%) from the floor, 5-of-21 (23.8%) from beyond the arc, and 1-of-4 (25%) at the line, while Williams shot 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from three, and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) on free throws. The Ephs recorded 46 points within the paint and 16 points off 18 Albright turnovers.
