Women's Lacrosse Dominates Fredonia, 15-5

UTICA, N.Y. – The Albright Lions women's lacrosse team grabbed a convincing 15-5 win over Fredonia in the first day of the SUNY Poly Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Lions improve to 3-2 overall on the season as they compete in the two-day tournament. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils will start the 2020 season 0-1 as they played their first game of the season.

Fredonia opened the game with a long possession after winning the initial draw control, and cashed in with a free position shot goal at the 28:20-mark to take the early 1-0 lead. First-year Abigail Hai registered the first two goals of the game for the Lions with a goal at the 23:29-mark, and a goal at the 21:08-mark off a pass from sophomore Taylor Filmer. Sophomore Lauren China extended the Lions lead to 3-1 at the 16:37-mark as Albright continued to force the Blue Devils into multiple turnovers. Fredonia was able to hold the Lions off the board for 10 minutes and cut the lead down to 3-2 at the 8:22-mark off another free position shot goal. Sophomore Ashleigh Tortorice was able to respond for the Lions to make it 4-2 at the 6:36-mark when senior Kelly Baumann found her wide open in front of the cage for her first goal of the game. Baumann then netted her first goal of the game at the 3:47-mark of the first half, extending the Lions lead to 5-2. Albright closed the first half out strong as they tallied two more goals within 17 seconds of each other in the final minute. Tortorice scored her second of the game with 44 seconds left before Baumann scored quickly off the ensuing draw control win.

Baumann took advantage of a Blue Devils turnover in the early minutes of the second half to score her third of the game at the 25:25-mark, putting the Lions up 8-2. Baumann then provided a helper on the Lions next goal at the 23:51-mark as she found Hai for her third goal of the game to make it 9-2. Albright continued to pull away from the Blue Devils as they scored three goals in a span of 4:46 to take a 12-2 lead at the 17:51-mark. Tortorice became the third Lions player to complete a hat trick at the 22:37-mark to put the Lions up 10-2 before sophomore Abbie Moist followed at the 19:20-mark with her first of the game. First-year Chloe Fornoff capped the stretch of goals with a free position shot tally. The Blue devils were able to string together three-straight goals to make it a 12-5 game at the 7:40-mark. However, the Lions closed the game out with three-straight goals of their own in the final six minutes. Baumann scored the first two in the run within a 1:40 of each other before Fornoff capped the day with her second of the game at the 0:55-mark.

The Lions held a sizable 35-15 shot advantage for the game, and a 25-11 edge in shots on goal. Albright also held an 18-13 advantage in ground balls, while the Blue Devils won 15 of the 22 draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Terae Mason earned the win after making six saves in the full 60 minutes, while Blue Devils goalkeeper Emily Carr suffered the loss after making 10 saves in the full 60 minutes. Baumann led the way with seven points behind five goals and two assists. She now stands nine points from becoming the Lions all-time leading scorer that was set last season by Sophie Bass. Hai and Tortorice each tallied three goals in the win.

Albright returns to action tomorrow, March 8th as they wrap up play in the SUNY Poly Tournament by facing Wellesley at 11 a.m.
