YORK, Pa. – The Albright women's soccer team picked up their first MAC Commonwealth win this season as they shutout York 2-0 on the road Tuesday evening.
With the win, the Lions improve to 1-3 in conference play and 6-6-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Spartans fall to 1-2 in MAC Commonwealth action and 8-5 overall.
York applied pressure early, tallying two shots on goal in the first seven minutes of action, but first-year goalkeeper
McKenna LeVan stood tall and stopped them both. Senior
Autumn Bieber sent a long shot in from outside of the box in the 29
th minute that looked promising, but Spartans goalkeeper Cat McCarty kept the Lions off the board. Senior
Diza Hasanaj earned the first goal of the game for Albright in the 32
nd minute off a penalty shot. LeVan completed three saves to keep the Spartans scoreless as the Lions led 1-0 entering the half.
The two teams battled hard in the opening minutes of the second half, as York again fired off back-to-back shots in the 52
nd and 53
rd minutes. Albright took the two-goal lead in the 70
th minute when Bieber and first-year
Alexis Baez played a little give and go action. Baez set Bieber up in front of the goal and she tucked the ball into the bottom left corner. Despite valiant late efforts, the Spartans failed to find the back of the net in 90 minutes of competitive conference action as the Lions claimed the 2-0 victory.
York held a 16-8 shot advantage and an 8-5 shot on goal advantage over Albright. LeVan earns her sixth shutout for the Lions this season with eight saves in 90 minutes of action. McCarty receives the loss for the Spartans with three saves in 90 minutes of play.
Albright returns to Shirk Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they host Stevenson to continue MAC Commonwealth action.
