Field Hockey Downed by Alvernia, 1-0

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team was dealt a 3-0 setback to Alvernia on Saturday evening in MAC Commonwealth action.
 
With the loss, the Lions drop to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in MAC Commonwealth action. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves improved to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
 
Alvernia jumped on the Lions in the first minute of the contest and drew a penalty corner just 19 seconds in. The Golden Wolves maintained pressure after the corner, and scored at the 45-second mark to take a 1-0 lead. Alvernia nearly extended their lead in the final minute of the first quarter with a pair of quality chances that were both turned away by Lions sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Heckman. The Golden Wolves continued momentum early in the second quarter as they were award a penalty stroke opportunity in the 17th minute. The stroke was converted to make it a 2-0 Alvernia lead. The Lions were held without a shot in the first half and drew one penalty corner opportunity in the 28th minute.
 
Junior defender Samantha McDonald came up big in the 38th minute as she made a defensive save after a Golden Wolves shot made it past Heckman. First-year Jenna Crosby recorded the Lions first shot of the game in the 43rd minute that was saved. Alvernia added one last goal in the 56th minute to cap the score off at 3-0.
 
The Golden Wolves held an 11-2 shot advantage for the game and a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. Alvernia also held a sizable 11-2 edge in penalty corners as well. Heckman was saddled with the loss after making three saves in the full 60 minutes. Golden Wolves goalkeeper Lexi Boettcher earned the win after making one save in the full time.
 
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, October 26th as they will travel to face No. 13 TCNJ at 4 p.m.
