Field Hockey Earns Hard-Fought 3-1 Win over Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. – Behind three different goal scorers, the Albright field hockey team defeated Stockton 3-1 in non-conference action on Thursday night.

With the win, the Lions improved to 6-10 overall as they closed out their 2021 regular season. The win was also Albright's first win over Stockton since 2010. Meanwhile, the Ospreys of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) fall to 8-7 overall.

Stockton applied early pressure on the Lions as they were awarded three penalty corners in the first seven minutes of action. The Ospreys finally cashed in on the third corner with a goal to take a 1-0 lead at the 7:19-mark. Albright began making its first push in the Ospreys zone as the first quarter winded down and was awarded a penalty corner with 55 seconds left in the quarter. Junior Olivia Scholl took advantage by ripping the ball into the cage off the corner to tie the game one. The Lions once again cashed in on a penalty corner to open the second quarter as sophomore Laurel Gingrich scored to put Albright up 2-1 in the 18th minute. Stockton looked to tie the game back up at two as the recorded seven shots in the final five minutes of the first half. Lions sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Heckman stood tall in the net as she turned away all seven shots to keep Albright in front at halftime.

The Lions had two good looks on the net to open the third quarter, but both were stopped by the Ospreys goalkeeper. After not having a shot go on the net in the third quarter, Stockton turned the pressure up in the fourth quarter as they had two shots saved by Heckman. Albright drew a penalty corner in the 53rd minute and once again converted off of it as first-year Olivia Lorah ripped the ball from the top of the arc, making it 3-1 Lions. Stockton had multiple chances in the 55th minute to cut into the lead, but Heckman turned away back-to-back shots in front of the net. Junior Samantha McDonald then kept the lead at two 20 seconds later with a pair of defensive saves. Those would be the final high scoring chances for the Ospreys in the contest as they had one more shot go wide in the final minute.

The Ospreys held a sizable 18-5 advantage in shots for the contest and a 13-5 edge in shots on goal. Stockton also held a 13-6 edge in penalty corners. Heckman earned the hard-fought win as she made a season-high 10 saves during the full 60 minutes. A pair of Osprey goalkeepers split action in the net as starter Alley Harris suffered the loss after yielding two goals in the first half. Kylie Mitchell made two saves in the second half for Stockton.
