POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Albright men's basketball team concluded the Vassar Tip-Off Tournament with a 68-60 win over the hosts, Vassar, on Saturday.
With the win, the Lions improve to 2-1 overall. Meanwhile, the Brewers fall to 0-2 overall.
Three Lions scored in double-figures as junior
Jordan Guerrero led the way with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Guerrero also tallied a team-leading seven rebounds, to which six were on the offensive end. Junior
Sean Miller added 12 points on a near perfect 6-of-7 shooting from the field, six rebounds, two steals, and tied for a game-high five assists. Senior
Troy Smoot recorded a game-high five steals, netted 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and went 2-for-3 from the three-point line. Senior
Sidney Brown added eight points while sophomore Isaac Lapierre tallied six points off the bench.
Vassar opened up the game with a three-pointer less than a minute into action. The two teams traded baskets but Albright finally took the lead with an and-one play by Guerrero at the 15:26-mark to bring the score to 13-10. The Lions then continued a 10-4 run to take a nine-point lead with 9:13 left to play. Vassar finally found some rhythm as they went on a 11-2 run to tie the game up at 27 at the 5:22-mark of the first half. Smoot snapped the run with a three-pointer to put the Lions back in front. The Brewers tied it back up at 30 after netting 3-of-4 free-throws on back-to-back opportunities from the charity stripe. Albright closed out the half on a 7-3 run, capped off with a bucket from Miller to put the Lions ahead 37-33 entering the break.
Albright came out of halftime on a 6-2 run to give them an 8-point lead with 16:13 remaining. Vassar kept within reach though, scoring a basket at the 15:28-mark to cut their deficit to 43-37. The two teams continued to trade baskets, but a jumper from senior
Isaiah Harris would allow the Lions to pull ahead with their first double-digit lead, 51-40, at the 10:55-mark. The Brewers chipped away and got with seven again, but eight unanswered points by the Lions, including two buckets from beyond the arc by Lapierre, would put Albright ahead 61-46 with 6:23 left to play. Albright got comfortable when Guerrero netted a bucket at the 3:19-mark to give the Lions their largest lead of the game at 16 points. Vassar tried to chip away at the deficit as they closed the game out with a 9-1 run, but Albright held onto their lead when the final buzzer went off as the Lions claimed the 68-60 win.
Albright shot 29-for-56 (51.8%) from the field, 7-for-20 (35.0%) from beyond the arc, and 3-for-12 (25.0%) from the charity stripe. The Lions tallied 26 points in the paint and saw 16 points off the bench. Meanwhile, Vassar shot 22-for-56 (39.2%) from the field, 6-for-19 (31.6%) from the three-point line, and 10-for-16 (62.5%) from the free throw line. The Brewers had 28 points in the paint and outrebounded the Lions 39-30.
Albright returns to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Franklin & Marshall to continue their non-conference schedule.
