SALEM, Va. – The Albright women's basketball team suffered a 61-48 setback to Shenandoah to open up the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic on Saturday evening.
 
With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-1 overall, while the Hornets improve to 2-0.
 
Senior 
Gabby Boggs led the Lions with a double-double, scoring 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and grabbing ten rebounds. Boggs also went 7-for-10 from the charity stripe and added a team-leading five assists, three blocks, and three steals. Senior 
Brady Wassel followed with ten points on 3-for-10 shooting from the field and went 2-for-4 from beyond the arc while adding five boards. Senior 
Maggie O'Hare added nine points on 3-for-11 shooting from the field, six rebounds, and two assists. Senior 
Amina Rauf netted eight points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field and added three rebounds and two assists.
 
Rauf opened up the game with an early three to get the Lions fired up. The Hornets scored on their next three possessions to put them up 6-3 to force a timeout by the Lions. Wassel tied the game up at six with a three-pointer at the 6:17-mark of the first quarter off a feed from Boggs. Shenandoah pulled ahead with a jumper, but O'Hare responded with a three to put the Lions in front 9-8 at the 4:35-mark. The Hornets closed out the quarter with a 9-2 run to claim a 17-11 lead at the end of the first. Shenandoah got their lead up to eight in the opening possession of the second stanza. The Lions chipped away, getting within four points following a Rauf three-pointer, but the Hornets responded with an 8-1 run to put them ahead 11 with 1:43 remaining in the second quarter. An and-one play from Boggs snapped the run as the Lions trailed 29-21 entering the half.
 
Wassel netted a pair of free throws in the opening minute of the third to get the Lions within six. However, Shenandoah got their momentum back as they went on an 8-2 run to increase their lead to 37-25 at the 7:02-mark. Boggs got the Lions within reach, going 3-for-4 on back-to-back opportunities at the free throw line, but the Hornets closed out the third with an 8-4 advantage to lead 45-32 entering the fourth. Back-to-back threes from Wassel and O'Hare cut the Lions deficit down to ten with 7:26 left to play. However, nine unanswered points from the Hornets gave them their largest lead of the game at 19 with just over five minutes remaining. Albright tried to chip away at their deficit, getting within 11 points within the final minute, but it was too late as Shenandoah netted the final bucket of the game to solidify their 61-48 victory.
 
Albright shot 16-for-49 (32.7%) from the field, 6-for-22 (27.3%) from beyond the arc, and 10 for 14 (71.4%) from the charity stripe. The Lions tallied 20 points in the paint 12 points off caused turnovers. Meanwhile, Shenandoah shot 27-for-54 (50%) from the field, 1-for-5 (20%) from the three-point line, and 6-for-10 (60%) from the free-throw line. The Hornets scored 32 points in the paint and had a bench that contributed 23 points. The battle on the boards was almost split, with a 32-30 advantage in favor of Shenandoah.
 
Albright will face the host of the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic, Roanoke, tomorrow at 1 p.m.
