READING, Pa. – A strong shooting performance and a dominant second half powered the Albright women's basketball team past Moravian as they claimed a 65-48 non-conference victory in the Bollman Center on Saturday.
With their fourth-straight win, the Lions improve to 7-3 overall while the Greyhounds overall record falls to 2-7.
Four Lions reached double figures with senior
Gabby Boggs leading all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor and a near-perfect 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Boggs tallied her ninth double-double of the season as she grabbed 11 rebounds. Senior
Brady Wassel added her third-straight double-double with ten points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field and 15 rebounds. Senior
Abby Gaffney notched 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting, six rebounds, and a game-high six assists. Senior
Amina Rauf posted 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Moravian came out of the gates scoring on their first two possessions of the game to take an early 4-point lead. Rauf got Albright on the board at the 7:32-mark and the Lions used an 8-4 run to tie the game up at eight with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The lead changed twice more before Albright scored six unanswered points to close out the quarter with a 14-10 lead. The Greyhounds scored the first two buckets of the second stanza to tie the game up at 14 at the 7:45-mark. The two tames traded baskets, but Gaffney put the Lions ahead with a jumper from beyond the arc at the 3:31-mark to give Albright a 21-18 lead. Moravian closed out the half with a 4-2 advantage to get them within one at 23-22.
The Lions scored the opening basket of the second half, but the Greyhounds capitalized on their next two possessions to take the lead back at 26-25. Boggs grasped the lead for the Lions once more at the 7:52-mark with an and-one play. Albright kept their foot on the gas from that point on and continued an 11-4 run to put them ahead 36-30 at the 5:10-mark of the third. The Greyhounds finally snapped the run to get them within four, but the Lions closed out the quarter with an 11-5 run and held a 47-37 lead entering the final stanza. Moravian attempted to chip away at their deficit, but Albright took a commanding 17-point lead at the 4:15-mark after scoring ten unanswered points. The Greyhounds battled hard, but the Lions continued to dominate and took their largest lead at 19-points twice to solidify a 65-48 non-conference victory.
Albright had a strong shooting performance as they shot 25-for-53 (47.2%) from the field, 3-for-9 (33.3%) from beyond the arc, and 12-for-14 (85.7%) from the charity stripe. The Lions posted dominated on the boards with a 44-31 rebound advantage and claimed 14 second-chance points. Meanwhile, Moravian shot 19-for-63 (30.2%) from the floor, 1-for-16 (6.3%) from three-point range, and 9-for-12 (75%) from the free-throw line. The Greyhounds were able to convert 18 points off turnovers and posted 32 points in the paint.
The Lions will return to action on Dec. 29 at the D3 Naples Shootout as they take on Baldwin Wallace at 1 p.m.
