READING, Pa. – The Albright men's basketball team was unable to overcome a strong shooting Mary Washington team as they fell 85-69 in the championship of the Double Tree Holiday Tournament on Thursday.
Earlier in the afternoon Johnson & Wales defeated Goucher 80-70 to claim third place in the tournament. The All-Tournament team consisted of Josh Zangerle (J&W),
Sidney Brown (Albright),
Isaiah Harris (Albright), Riley Welch (UMW), and Anias Saunders (UMW) who was also named MVP of the Double Tree Holiday Tournament.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 4-7 overall while the Eagles advance to 12-3.
Senior
Sidney Brown led Albright with 23 points behind 9-for-18 shooting from the field and 5-for-11 from beyond the arc. Junior
Zyon Grant followed with 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the floor and a near-perfect 4-for-5 from three-point range. Senior
Isaiah Harris notched eight points on 3-for-7 shooting from the floor and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe. First-year
Eric Chamberlain added six points and team-high six rebounds off the bench.
The Eagles opened the game up with seven unanswered points to take an early lead. Grant got Albright on the board with a three-pointer that was then matched by Mary Washington. Junior
Sean Miller hit a pull-up jumper that brought the score to 10-5 at the 17:47-mark. The Eagles then went on a 15-3 run that gave them a 17-point lead. Grant finally snapped the run with another three-pointer to cut the Lions deficit to 25-11 at the 12:06-mark. Mary Washington kept their foot on the gas with a 9-3 run to take a 20-point lead over Albright. The two teams then went on an even 14-14 run to close out the first half with Mary Washington ahead 48-28.
The two teams continuously traded three-pointers to start the second half, but the Eagles eventually scored 11 unanswered points to take their largest lead at 30 at the 14:45-mark, bringing the score to 67-37. A 10-3 run by the Lions sparked by Grant and capped off with a three from senior
Deion Booker brought the score to 71-47 with under ten minutes remaining. Albright continued to outscore Mary Washington 22-14 throughout the final ten minutes of the second half, but it was not enough to overcome their deficit as the Eagles claimed the 85-69 victory to claim the championship title of the Double Tree Holiday Tournament.
Albright shot 27-for-62 (43.5%) from the floor, 12-for-31 (38.7%) from beyond the arc, and 3-for-7 (42.9%) from the charity stripe. The Lions tallied 24 points in the paint and saw 19 points off the bench. Meanwhile, Mary Washington shot 32-for-62 (51.6%) from the field, 14-for-35 (40%) from three-point range, and a perfect 7-for-7 (100%) from the free-throw line. The Eagles tallied 30 points in the paint and held a 40-29 rebound advantage over the Lions.
Albright will return to MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday, Jan. 5
