Women's Basketball Earns 59-49 Win Over Eastern

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's basketball team completed a sweep of its home-and-home series against Eastern with a 59-49 win at the Bollman Center on Friday night in MAC Commonwealth play.
 
The Lions improve to 2-0 on the 10-game 2021 season as they played their first game in the Bollman Center since February 22nd, 2020. Meanwhile, the Eagles fall to 0-2 in their first season as a member of the MAC Commonwealth
 
For the second-straight game, junior Gabby Boggs led the Lions in scoring. Boggs posted a game-high 18 points while adding six rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Classmate Maggie O'Hare registered her first collegiate double-double behind 15 points, and a career-high 12 rebounds. Brady Wassel notched a double-double as well with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Abby Gaffney dished out a game-high five assists.
 
Senior Allison Dienes opened the scoring with a jumper nine seconds into the contest as the teams traded baskets for the majority of the first quarter. Neither team led by more than three points in the opening 10 minutes. The Eagles held an 11-10 lead after the first quarter before the Lions started the second quarter on an 8-2 run to go up 18-13 at the 6:18-mark. With Albright leading 22-17, the Eagles rattled off six-straight points to go up 23-22 with 1:12 left in the first half. O'Hare responded with a three-pointer on the Lions next possession to give the Lions a 25-23 lead at halftime.
 
O'Hare then provided a spark for the Lions to open the second half by scoring all 12 points in a 12-2 run as Albright took their largest lead of the game at 37-25 at the 5:59-mark. The Lions maintained an eight-point lead at the end of the third quarter, and stretched their lead back out to 11 points at 49-38 with 6:16 left in regulation following a layup from Gaffney. The Eagles began to heat up from the field as they used a 10-2 run to make it a 51-48 game behind back-to-back three pointers. Junior Amina Rauf slammed the door on any Eastern rally with a three-pointer of her own at the 2:41-mark of the fourth quarter to put the Lions up 54-48. Albright held the Eagles to one point in the final 2:21 of the contest as they pulled away for the 10-point win.
 
The Lions shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field and went just 3-of-11 (27.3%) from three-point range. Albright went 4-of-6 (66.7%) at the free throw line, and held a sizable 43-32 rebounding advantage that led to a 17-8 edge in second chance points. Meanwhile, the Eagles shot 30 percent (18-of-60) from the field while going just 2-of-14 (14.3%) from beyond the arc. Eastern went 11-of-16 from the charity stripe and scored 10 points off 14 Lion turnovers.
 
Da'Naziah Brown and Viki Kneis each led the Eagles with 11 points and eight rebounds with Kneis scoring all of her points in the first half. After leading all scorers the previous night with 18 points, the Lions held Jaelyn Harris to eight points on 2-of-14 shooting from the field.
 
The Lions return to action on Thursday, February 18th as they will begin a home-and-home series on the road against Widener at 7 p.m.
