DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Albright men's basketball team rallied late before ultimately suffering a 66-61 loss to Delaware Valley in MAC crossover play on Thursday night.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-2 overall on the season after splitting a pair of games last weekend against Widener. Meanwhile, the Aggies earned their first win of the 2021 season as they improved to 1-3.
Sophomore
Jordan Guerrero led the Lions with a double-double of 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Senior
Samuel Majekodunmi tallied a team-high 14 points, while junior
Corey Simmons posted 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore
Robert Mangum added nine points off the bench along with three rebounds and two assists.
The Aggies jumped on the Lions early as they went up 7-2 at the 17:11-mark of the first half. Albright rallied to get within 12-10 at the 15:15-mark behind five-straight points from Guerrero. However, the Lions could not grab the lead from the Aggies early on as they held a 17-15 lead at the 11:56-mark. Delaware Valley then used a 14-3 run over the span of 3:09 to take a 31-18 lead with 8:47 left in the first half. The Aggies went 5-of-7 from the field during that stretch with three of the field goals being three-pointers. Albright continued to struggle from the field as they made just one field goal in the final 10:58 of the first half. The Aggies took advantage by extending their lead out to 39-24 at halftime.
Delaware Valley continued to pull away from the Lions as they opened the second half on a 14-6 run to take a 53-30 lead, its largest of the game at the 13:32-mark. Albright began to rally as they went on a 15-4 run over the span of 5:59 to cut the Delaware Valley advantage down to 57-45 at the 6:29-mark. The Lions continued its run as they brought the deficit down into single digits at 59-52 with 2:54 left in regulation. Albright was able to get within five points at 61-56 with 1:22 regulation, and forced an Aggies turnover on the next possession to have a chance to further cut into the lead. However, a turnover on the following possession ultimately slammed the door on any potential Lions comeback. Albright would not be able to get any closer than five points the rest of the way as the Aggies never trailed in the contest.
The Lions shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the field after going just 26.9 percent in the first half. Albright went just 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from three-point range, and 23-of-34 (67.6%) from the free throw line. The Lions also held a 39-30 rebounding advantage as well. Meanwhile, the Aggies went 21-of-49 (42.9%) from the field and 9-of-22 (40.9%) from three-point range. The Aggies went 15-of-21 (71.4%) from the free throw line including going 6-of-7 in the final minute of action to close out the game.
Matt Paulus led the Aggies with a game-high 21 points behind going 4-of-8 from three-point range along with grabbing four steals. Pernell Ghee recorded 17 points and seven rebounds, while Ryan Black posted 15 points after going 5-of-9 from the field.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow, February 26
th as the Lions will host the Aggies at the Bollman Center for another 7 p.m. tip-off.
