Women's Hoops Downs Alvernia 68-57 on Senior Night

READING, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team led wire-to-wire against Alvernia as they defeated the Golden Wolves 68-57 on Thursday night in MAC Commonwealth play at the Bollman Center.
 
Prior to the contest, the Lions honored its lone senior Allison Dienes as a part of senior day activities. The Lions got back on track as they improved to 6-3 overall and 4-3 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves fall to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
 
Five Lions reached double-figures in scoring on the evening. Junior Gabby Boggs led the Lions in four different statistical categories on the evening that was highlighted by a career-high 20 rebounds. Boggs posted 12 points, six assists, five steals, and four blocks as well in the win. Classmate Maggie O'Hare led the Lions in scoring with 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Brady Wassel added 13 points along with six rebounds, and four steals while Abby Gaffney posted 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. Junior Amina Rauf added 11 points off the bench on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, and matched her career-high with four steals.
 
The Lions started strong as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the 7:14-mark of the first quarter. Albright continued to dominate the quarter as they used a 12-5 run to take an 18-5 lead with 54 seconds left. The Lions limited the Golden Wolves to shoot just 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from the field in the first quarter. Alvernia began to find its footing in the second quarter as they scored the first five points to cut the Lions lead down 18-11 at the 8:15-mark. The Lions responded by scoring six of the next eight points between the two teams, and went up 24-13 at the 6:19-mark. Alvernia countered with 10 unanswered points to make it a one-point game at 24-23 with 2:30 left in regulation. Wassel snapped the run with a three-pointer which in turn sparked 10 unanswered points by the Lions. The Golden Wolves cashed in on a second chance opportunity before the buzzer to make it a 34-25 Albright lead at halftime.
 
The Golden Wolves made a run at the Lions again with an 8-2 run to open the third quarter, bringing the deficit down to 36-33 at the 7:45-mark. Leading 39-36, Albright rattled off nine-straight points to go up 48-36 at the 3:11-mark of the third quarter. However, the Golden Wolves refused to go away as they closed the third quarter out with a trio of three-pointers, one being at the buzzer, to cut the Lions lead down to 52-49. The teams traded baskets to open the fourth quarter before going on a scoreless drought of 3:25. Alvernia made it a one-point game at 56-55 with 4:49 left in regulation on a three-pointer following a layup from Wassel. However, the Lions closed the game out on a 12-2 run to hold on for the win.
 
Albright shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field and went just 2-of-13 (15.4%) from beyond the arc. The Lions shot 70 percent (14-of-20) from the free throw line, and held a slight 36-35 rebounding edge. Albright scored 21 points off 23 Golden Wolve turnovers. Meanwhile, Alvernia shot 33.3 percent from the field and went 10-of-27 (37%) from three-point range. The Golden Wolves shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from the free throw line as well.
 
Jordan Karmonick registered a game-high 20 points and dished out a team-high four assists. Kayla Williams followed with 11 points, while Julia Ewen hauled in a team-high 15 rebounds.
 
The two teams will square off one more time tomorrow, March 12th with the venue shifting to Alvernia for a 7:30 p.m. start.
