Baseball Dealt Two Setbacks to Stevenson

STEVENSON, Md. – The Albright Lions baseball team was unable to overcome a red-hot Stevenson offense as they were swept in a doubleheader by the Mustangs by scores of 11-5 and 11-1 on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth play.

With the losses, the Lions drop to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

GAME ONE
Senior shortstop Jimmie Gentry led off the game with a double to right field and came around to score two batters later on a RBI single from junior Dylan Harlos. A walk and a passed ball set the Lions up with runners on second and third with two outs, and sophomore catcher Austin Gromlich came through with a two-run single to put the Lions up 3-0. Stevenson loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first and grabbed its first run of the game off a hit by pitch. Senior pitcher Shaun O'Reilly escaped without further damage by inducing a double play in the next at-bat. The Mustangs battled back in the bottom of the second inning with a walk and a double to open the frame. A RBI groundout made it a 3-2 game before a sacrifice fly tied the game in the next at-bat. Stevenson took its first lead of the game with a solo home run to left center one batter later.

Junior first baseman Josh Jacavage tied the game up at four in the top of the third on a two-out home run to right field, the first of the season for the Lions. The Mustangs saw the bottom of the third end on a double play, but were able to take advantage one inning later with four runs on two hits with one error. Stevenson loaded the bases and got three of its runs off a bases-clearing double. Albright put runners on first and third with one out following a pair of singles, and cut the Stevenson led down to 8-5 on a sacrifice fly from Harlos. The Mustangs responded with its final three runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Stevenson retired six of the last seven Lions batters to conclude the game.

GAME TWO
Just like in game one, the Lions took the initial lead as Jacavage roped a two-out double to left center to make it 1-0. Albright put runners on second and third with no outs and grabbed a run despite a double play in the previous at-bat to Jacavage. Stevenson responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning. The Mustangs started the rally with a home run their second at-bat before a two-out two-run double added the other two runs. Stevenson added to its lead in the bottom of the third with three runs on four hits to go up 6-1, all of which came from the first four batters of the inning. The Mustangs extended its lead to 8-1 on a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. After retiring the Lions in order during the top of the fifth, the Mustangs continued to pull away with three more runs off two hits. Albright was unable to advance a runner past first base during the last four innings of play.

Gentry led the Lions offense by going 4-of-7 combined through the two games with three of the hits and two runs scored coming in game one. Jacavage and Harlos each posted two RBI's between the pair of contests, while Gromlich went 1-of-3 with two RBI's in game one. O'Reilly suffered the loss in game one after allowing eight runs (six earned) on four hits and six walks.
