Baseball Defeated by Messiah

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions baseball team suffered an 18-1 setback to Messiah on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Kelchner Field.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 1-9 overall with the game serving as a non-conference contest. Meanwhile, the Falcons improve to 3-6-1 overall.

The Falcons jumped on the Lions early as they scored three runs on one hit and on error. Messiah used a double to take the initial lead before bringing home two more on a throwing error, and a sacrifice fly. Albright looked to respond as the first two batters reached base, but three-straight outs ended the threat. Messiah extended its lead in the top of the second as they scored five runs on three hits. The first two runs came around on a single after a balk put runners on second and third base. Messiah grabbed the three runs with two outs on a home run to right field. The Lions put a runner on second base with no outs following a single and a wild pitch, but once again were unable to get on the board.

Sophomore second baseman Reece Adam manufactured the Lions lone run of the game in the bottom of the third after he walked to open the inning. Adam advanced to second on a passed ball before making it to third on a groundout. He then came around to score on a wild pitch. Messiah responded in the top of the fourth with four runs on four hits to go up 12-1. The Falcons added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of home runs to take a 14-1 lead before bringing two more runs across one inning later to make it 16-1. Messiah capped the game with back-to-back home runs to lead off the top of the ninth to go up 18-1.

Four different Lions tallied on hit on the day with Adam scoring the lone run of the game. Junior pitcher Connor Trower started the game and suffered the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on three hits and three walks. Luke Blasick earned the win for the Falcons in relief after throwing three shutout innings, allowing one hit, and striking out three. Messiah saw six different players hit home runs on the afternoon, and Thomas Murray paced the offense by going 3-of-5 from the plate with a home run.

The Lions will return to action on Friday, April 2nd as they will begin a four-game series against York on the road at 12 p.m.
