Women's Lacrosse Falls in Overtime to Widener in Commonwealth Tournament

CHESTER, Pa. – The Albright women's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 11-10 overtime loss to Widener in the first round of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament Tuesday evening.
 
With the loss, the Lions close out the 2021 season 7-7 overall and 4-4 in MAC Commonwealth play. Widener improves to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play and will advance to face the No. 2 seed York in the semifinal round of the tournament on Thursday, April 29th.
 
Junior Maddie Taylor got the Lions rolling early with a woman-up goal in their first possession of the game off a feed from classmate Taylor Filmer at the 28:42-mark. Junior Abbie Moist followed shortly after with a goal of her own to give Albright a 2-0 lead. Widener rallied with a three-goal run to give them their first lead of the game at the 3:58-mark. Junior Ashleigh Tortorice snapped the run with a goal off a feed from Filmer at the 3:08-mark to tie it up at 4. Widener closed out the half with back-to-back goals to hold a 5-3 lead at the half.
 
The Pride opened up the second half with two more goals to give them 7-3 lead at the 27:24-mark. Sophomore Chloe Fornoff gave the Lions the energy they needed with a woman-up goal following a Widener yellow card at the 26:30-mark. Widener responded with a goal at the 22:55-mark to give them an 8-5 lead. Fornoff then sparked a four-goal run for the Lions that was capped off by junior Lauren China to tie the game up at 8 with 12:16 left in regulation. Widener snapped the Lions' run and took the 9-8 lead at the 10:48-mark. Moist tied the game back up at 9 at the 8:38-mark. The Pride took the lead again at the 3:07-mark but China kept the Lions alive scoring in the final 21 seconds of regulation that sent the game into overtime. Unfortunately, the Pride controlled the ball off the draw and scored on the first possession in overtime to solidify their 11-10 win over the Lions.
 
Widener held a slight 24-19 shot advantage over Albright and won the battle for ground balls 22-14. Widener also pulled 14 draw controls to Albright's 9. Senior goalkeeper Terae Mason receives the loss for the Lions despite making nine crucial saves in 60 minutes of play. Junior goalkeeper Maddie Medve receives the win for the Pride with four saves in 60 minutes of play. Taylor led the Lions in scoring with three goals and four draw controls. China registered three points off two goals and one assist. Filmer also added three points off three assists. Fornoff and Moist each tallied two goals.
