Field Hockey Shuts Down Hood, 3-0

READING, Pa. – First-year Chelsea Johnson scored two goals in the first half as the Albright Lions field hockey team defeated Hood 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth play on a warm Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.

With the win, the Lions improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Blazers fall to 1-5 overall on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

Hood generated pressure in the first minute and was awarded a penalty stroke after contact in the box. Junior goalkeeper Adele Thomas stopped the shot from Tanae Johnson to keep the game scoreless. The Lions nearly got on the board in the third minute when junior Megan Keller beat the Blazers goalkeeper, but the shot hit the post and bounced away from the cage. Albright broke through in the ninth minute when Johnson tipped in a shot from classmate Jenna Crosby to put the Lions up 1-0. Sophomore Morgan Kopcik had her initial shot off a penalty corner saved before Crosby gathered the ball and pushed it past the goalkeeper. Johnson added her second goal just two minutes into the second quarter when Kopcik threaded the ball past two Blazer defenders with a pass, and Johnson was able to beat the Blazers goalkeeper on a 1-on-1.

Each team just tallied one shot in the third quarter before the Lions added to their lead when Crosby registered her first collegiate goal on a penalty stroke in the 47th minute of play. Behind strong defense, the Lions did not allow a single Blazer shot in the fourth quarter as they sealed the victory at 3-0.

The Lions held a sizable 10-3 shot advantage for the contest, and a 9-3 shots on goal edge. Albright also held an 8-1 edge in penalty corner opportunities. Thomas earned the win for the Lions after posting three saves in the first three quarters of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Heckman entered the cage for the last 15 minutes of the contest. Meanwhile, Blazers goalkeeper Richana Brown suffered the loss after making six saves in the full 60 minutes.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday, September 22nd when they will host Immaculata at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
