SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Albright Lions field hockey team was downed 1-0 by No. 17 Susquehanna on Thursday night in non-conference action.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 3-5 on the season. Meanwhile, the River Hawks improved to 7-2 overall and bounced back from an overtime loss on Tuesday.
Susquehanna drew a penalty corner in the 5th minute of the contest and ended up receiving a penalty stroke following an initial shot being saved. Lions junior goalkeeper
Adele Thomas came up big and made the save on the stroke to keep the game scoreless. The River Hawks jumped on the Lions in the opening minute of the second quarter as they recorded three shots and drew two penalty corners. Susquehanna's long possession near the Lions cage finally paid off in the 17th minute when they scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal. The River Hawks had a chance to extend the lead in the 24th minute, but were turned away by Thomas.
After recording just one shot in the third quarter, the River Hawks had multiple shots saved by Thomas in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. The Lions continued to hold Susquehanna from extending its lead but were unable to generate any pressure on the River Hawks cage. Thomas saved one more good River Hawk scoring chance in the 58th minute following a penalty corner.
The River Hawks held the Lions without a shot during the contest while recording 13 shots of their own. Susquehanna also held a sizable 8-1 edge in penalty corners as well. Thomas made eight saves in the full 60 minutes of action, while River Hawk goalkeeper Mackenzie Bross earned the win after holding down the cage in the full time.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, October 2nd as they will travel to face No. 5 Messiah at 1 p.m.
