READING, Pa. - The Albright field hockey team (7-9, 3-4 MAC Commonwealth) was in action this evening against Stockton University (6-10, 0-6 New Jersey Athletic Conference) in a non conference matchup. The Lions won the game 3-2 on a game winning goal from Lamya Mejias. The win for Albright is the second straight over Stockton University.
The visitors got on the board first scoring just three minutes into the opening period.
Albright was able to tie the game up just before halftime on Chelsea Johnson's 10th goal of the season. Johnson has now scored in four straight games continuing her fantastic sophomore campaign.
After trailing 1-0 Albright found themselves in front 2-1 late in the third quarter. Johnson cut through the Osprey defense and drew a penalty stroke. Mejias calmly stepped up to take the stroke and deposited the ball in the left side of the net.
The lead was short lived for the Lions when Stockon tied the game up two minutes later.
Overtime was on the cusp of occurring but Mejias collected a loose ball in front and fired the ball into the back of the goal with just three minutes left to play to give the Lions the lead for good. It was the first game-winning goal of Mejias career and it propelled Albright to their fifth win in their last six games.
Johnson and Olivia Lorah were credited with the assist on the game winning goal.
As it currently stands Albright and Lebanon Valley are tied for the fifth and final MAC Commonwealth playoff spot at 3-4. Albright owns the tiebreaker over LVC because of their 3-1 victory over the Flying Dutchmen this past weekend. With a win over Eastern University on Wednesday, the Lions will clinch the final playoff spot regardless of LVC's game against Messiah on Wednesday.
After the game, Coach Co said "Today was a tougher game than I think we expected it to be but I am proud of this team for finding a way to win. It wasn't always pretty but they found a way to finish this game with a victory. I think this game really shows how much we have improved as a team over the course of this season and now we will use this momentum to hopefully finish the season strong on Wednesday!"
