FREDERICK, Md. – The Albright men's basketball team's season came to a close on Wednesday as they fell 82-79 in the MAC Commonwealth quarterfinals at No. 2 Hood.
The Lions conclude the 2021-22 season as the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament with a 6-10 record in conference and 10-15 overall record. Meanwhile, the Blazers advance to the semifinal round and improve to 18-6 overall.
Four Lions reached double-figures with junior
Jordan Guerrero leading the way. Guerrero totaled a career-high 26 points on a near-perfect 9-for-10 shooting from the floor, 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, 5-for-5 from the charity stripe, and nine rebounds off the bench. Junior
Robert Mangum followed with 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field, 2-for-5 from three-point range, and four assists. Seniors
Sidney Brown and
Deion Booker notched ten points apiece.
Hood jumped out to a 14-5 run to open the game capped with back-to-back threes to force an early Albright timeout. The Lions rallied with a 13-2 run topped with a Booker three-pointer to jump in front 18-16 at the 14:20-mark. Hood tied the game at 18, but a three from Guerrero and a layup from sophomore
Chris Kouemi gave Albright a five-point lead. The Blazers answered with an 8-2 advantage jumpstarted with a pair of threes to take a 26-25 lead at the 7:32-mark. The Lions pulled ahead once again behind a 10-4 run to claim a 35-30 lead with 2:18 remaining in the first. Hood closed out the first half on an 8-2 run to hold a 38-37 lead entering the break.
Albright came out of the half with back-to-back baskets from junior
Sean Miller and Guerrero to pull ahead 42-38. Hood continued to fire off shots from downtown and hit two more to take the lead, but Mangum tied the game at 44 at the 16:19-mark. The teams traded baskets and Mangum tied the game once again at 50. Guerrero earned two trips to the charity stripe where he went 4-for-4 to give Albright a four-point lead. The two teams continued to trade leads, but an 8-3 run for the Lions fueled by Guerrero gave them a 68-65 lead at the 5:33-mark. Hood responded with an 8-3 run of their own to take back the lead at 73-71. An and-one from Guerrero put Albright back in the lead, but a pair of free throws and a big three pointer from Hood gave the Blazers momentum to close out the game. The Lions had two big baskets in the final minute from Brown and Mangum, but Hood solidified their 82-79 victory with a pair of free throws to advance to the semifinals.
Albright shot 29-for-60 (48.3%) from the field, 9-for-27 (33.3%) from three-point range, and 12-for-13 (92.3%) from the charity stripe. The Lions tallied 36 points in the paint, 36 points off the bench, and held a slight 34-31 rebound advantage. Meanwhile, Hood shot 25-for-64 (39.1%) from the floor, 14-for-42 (33.3%) from beyond the arc, and 18-for-19 (94.7%) from the free throw line. The Blazers saw 25 points off their bench and earned 16 second chance points.
The No. 2 seed Hood is set to host the No. 6 seed Widener on Friday in the semifinal round of the MAC Commonwealth tournament.
